Former Ukrainian president lands in Kyiv to face treason case

By Pavel Polityuk and Natalia Zinets KYIV (Reuters) -

Ukraine's former president, Petro Poroshenko, landed in Kyiv on Monday to face treason charges in a case he says was trumped up by allies of his successor, Volodymyr Zelenskiy. In a brief stand-off at border control after arriving on a flight from Warsaw, Poroshenko accused border guards of taking away his passport. He later greeted a crowd of thousands of cheering and flag-waving supporters outside the airport. Poroshenko's return sets up a showdown with President Zelenskiy's government in what critics say is an ill-judged distraction as Uk...

Germany one step closer to scrapping Nazi-era abortion law

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's justice ministry presented a draft law on Monday that would do away with a Nazi-era law forbidding doctors to provide information about abortions. Doctors in Germany are allowed to say they offer termination of pregnancies but are not allowed to provide any further information on such procedures. Critics have said the law makes it too difficult for women to access information about which procedures are available and who provides them. Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said getting rid of the law, introduced in 1933, would make it easier for women looking for more in...

Researchers zeroing in on COVID-related loss of smell and taste

Researchers may have narrowed down the reason some people who contract COVID-19 lose their sense of smell and taste. A new study published in the journal Nature Genetics points to damaged cells in the olfactory epithelium, a part of the nose that traps odor molecules and submits a response to the brain, as the likely culprit. However, that’s not the end of the mystery. “Early data suggests that supporting cells of the olfactory epithelium are the ones mostly being infected by the virus, and presumably this leads to the death of the neurons themselves,” Dr. Justin Turner, an associate professor...

Why Prince Andrew is losing his military titles, but staying a prince

Following rapid developments in the sexual abuse lawsuit against Prince Andrew, Buckingham Palace issued a statement announcing that Andrew will lose all his remaining patronages and military titles (such as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards). Additionally, he will no longer use his HRH (“His Royal Highness”) style.

This is an overdue step after Andrew effectively left public life following his disastrous Newsnight interview, where he unconvincingly attempted to address the allegations of sexual assault levelled against him by Virginia Giuffre.

Wealthy venture capitalist's podcast goes off the rails after he dismisses Uyghur genocide: 'It is below my line'

During the All-In podcast this weekend, billionaire venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya gave his thoughts on the ongoing persecution of Uyghur Muslims in China, saying that the genocide of a religious minority by an authoritarian government is not high on his list of things to be concerned about.

While the panel discussed things President Joe Biden could do to jumpstart his seemingly stalled agenda, All-In co-host Jason Calacanis posited that him being more aggressive on "China policy" could be one approach. But Palihapitiya disagreed.
