EU not interested in protecting Belfast peace agreement: Northern Ireland first minister

LONDON (Reuters) - Northern Ireland's first minister said the European Union's promise of legal action over the UK extending grace periods for trade showed its priority was protecting the trading bloc, not the Belfast peace agreement. "If they were, they would not be taking the action that they're taking a present." The European Union said on Wednesday it would take legal action after the British government unilate...

Military planned a second airstrike on Syria — but Biden called it off to prevent civilian casualties: report

On Thursday, NBC News reported that President Joe Biden called off a planned second military strike on Syria, because he did not want to run the risk of civilian casualties.

"Because of the presence of civilians, only one target was bombed in last week's operation, which came in retaliation for recent rocket attacks on U.S. personnel that the Pentagon blamed on Iranian-backed Shiite militia in Iraq, the administration official and a Defense official said," reported Dan De Luce and Carol Lee. "The president made the decision to cancel the separate air strike after military reconnaissance revealed a woman and two children in the courtyard of the intended target, according to the senior administration official."

The 'Dutch Trump' crashes and burns after going all in on COVID conspiracies

When Thierry Baudet won a landslide victory that sent him to the Dutch senate, many thought he would go on to win the country's general elections in March 2021 as a "palatable" alternative to the Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders.

"He served the same smörgåsbord of nostalgia, nationalism and anti-immigrant xenophobia as Wilders, but he presented as a more clean-cut, decent, thoughtful figure," writes The Guardian's Joost de Vries.
