Discussing the continuing fall-out over a 60 Minutes interview with adult film star Stormy Daniels, and the resulting attacks from both the White House and Trump's personal attorney, a former U.S. Attorney said the Trump team is losing the battle to control the story with their bumbling attempts to play defense.
Appearing on CNN with host Brianna Keilar, lawyer Michael Moore -- who served as a United States Attorney in Georgia from 2010 to 2015 -- claimed Trump is not being well served by his increasingly understaffed legal teams.
With host Keilar noting that a newly released poll showing two thirds of the American public believes Trump's female accusers, CNN political commentator Alice Stewart was asked about a scandal that won't go away -- and how it impacts Trump.
"It depends where we are in the economy. Those numbers are quite telling," Stewart replied. "I think we can all agree that anyone with common sense, based on the president's history, believes these women. In addition to those numbers, more than half the people poll in our CNN poll say these women should be free to talk."
Noting a blow-up between Michael Cohen's attorney and Daniels' attorney, Michael Avenatti, Keilar suggested, "We've seen these clips of the lawyers fighting. You don't have to go watch Bravo -- you can just watch the news and get your reality show fix. It's almost unreal."
"But their rhetoric really has escalated, and the lawyer for Michael Cohen said once the facts settle out of court, Cohen will absolutely annihilate this guy. Now, that side not known for understatement for sure," she quipped before adding, "But where do you see this whole drama heading?"
"It seems to me the Trump team and the Cohen team are stepping in every trap that Stormy Daniels' lawyers might be setting in this case," Moore said with a bemused smile. "They get him to respond to things he shouldn't respond to, they get him to say things off the cuff with a certain amount of hyperbole that will get him in trouble at the end of the day. I think they're setting the expectations too high."
"With that in mind, when you look at how these two lawyers are behaving, this back and forth that we've seen repeatedly now, who is serving their client well and who isn't?" Keilar pressed.
"Well, Stormy Daniels' lawyer has gotten the case out there and he's able to sort of plant some media bombs that the Trump team seems to be stepping on time and time again," Moore elaborated. "I don't think the Trump team is helping themselves at all."
"It's interesting to me they finally got their client to be quiet there, and maybe that tells us something about the allegations, too," he added. "Remember, he was very critical of Al Franken for not saying anything, but yet he justified his support for Roy Moore saying, 'I didn't do it, it's not true.' We haven't heard Trump denying these allegations."
