In an open letter to Donald Trump, a former New Hampshire GOP lawmaker -- who admitted that he is a major fan of the president -- begged him not to run again in 2020 and risk losing the White House.
According to Michael Moffett, who served one term in the New Hampshire House of Representatives as well as a stint as an officer in the Marine Corp, he loves what Trump has done but thinks Trump should step aside and let another candidate run on what Moffat considers Trump's successes -- without Tump's personal baggage.
Writing in the Union-Leader, Moffatt explained, "Lower taxes, less regulation, fairer trade policies, enhanced border security, solid judicial appointments, low unemployment and a booming economy have all combined to strengthen a case for your reelection. Our country has done well during your tenure. Thank you!"
But...
"So why does this open letter implore you not to run for reelection?" he continued. "You like blunt straight talk, right, Mr. President?"
"As craven and corrupt as your 2016 opponent was, she still outpolled you by almost 4 million votes," he advised. "Razor thin margins in Midwestern battleground states gave you the necessary electoral votes, but the mid-term elections just showed that you shouldn’t expect a reprise of 2016 in 2020."
Moffat suggest that Republicans who might also want to run against Trump will work hard to undercut him.
"While you could certainly count on folks like myself, would we be enough, given Republican Establishment realities?" he asked. "Don’t expect Low Energy Jeb to help much. Or Little Marco. Or Lying Ted. Or Carly. Or Kasich. Or the McCain people. On and on."
Fearful of losing the White House, Moffat suggested Trump step aside because of his age ("Fair questions will be asked about prospects for your continued good health.") and let someone younger run, suggesting a "Nikki Haley/Marco Rubio ticket," before pointing out the biggest obstacle to regaining the House of Representatives.
"There are other exciting ticket possibilities as well —tickets that would remove the Dems’ biggest issue: You," he wrote, before adding, "History has been less kind to rejected one-term Presidents. Think Herbert Hoover or Jimmy Carter ... Let your final decision reflect courage and wisdom — not ego and hubris."
