Now that the House Republicans have set in motion an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, despite having no obvious evidence of wrongdoing, one long-time progressive writer claimed he welcomes their efforts, believing it will help the current president be re-elected.

In a featured column for the New Republic, editor-in-chief Michael Tomasky pointed to both the historical record on impeachment results impacting partisan voters and the fact that Republicans are living in a confirmation bias bubble.

As he wrote, there is little appetite among voters to see an impeachment take up time in the House, with even some GOP lawmakers questioning the upcoming proceedings.

Nonetheless, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) are pressing headlong into going after the presumptive 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, just like they did with Bill Clinton, only to see Clinton's approval ratings skyrocket to its highest number ever (according to Gallup) after his impeachment brouhaha.

According to Tomasky, the House Republicans have only themselves to blame for what may happen in the 2024 presidential election because they are letting conservative outlets like Fox News take them down a losing path.

After writing that the impeachment of Biden, "Will backfire like a badly tuned 1975 Pontiac Grand Am," Tomasky explained that Fox News "devouring" constituents are the only voters that are interested in an impeachment — and House Republicans aren't seeing the bigger picture.

"This madness about Biden having done something corrupt is all they hear," he said.

"As far as these constituents are concerned, to oppose the impeachment of Biden is the moral equivalent of voting to grant Charles Manson parole," he wrote of the Fox News MAGA Republicans, before suggesting the elected officials, "Have to confuse the country’s swing voters into not being sure which candidate is the more corrupt. They have to get low-information voters to think, 'Well, you know, they both seem pretty skuzzy to me.' But they are, at all times, telling on themselves."

"These people are disgusting. And next November, they’ll learn that the American people see through them," he predicted before adding, "Bring this impeachment on. It will fill the news, expose these cranks, reveal their profound cynicism—and do more to reelect Joe Biden than anything Biden himself could do."
