A Republican state senator in Georgia who has been the top voice calling for the impeachment of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has been ousted from the party's caucus, reported Newsweek on Thursday.
"Today's removal is a direct result of me calling on my Republican colleagues in the Senate to do their job and sign onto an emergency session to investigate Fani Willis," said Sen. Colton Moore in a statement given to Newsweek. "The Georgia Constitution clearly outlines the legislature's power to call an emergency session to investigate a judicial officer. After urging my Republican Senate colleagues to join me... they responded by acting like children and throwing me out of the caucus."
This comes after Gov. Brian Kemp made clear he doesn't believe impeaching Willis is appropriate, and as Republicans have fought among themselves about whether, and how, to retaliate against her for indicting former President Donald Trump and his allies.
House Speaker Jon Burns has also rejected Moore's idea to defund Willis' office, saying the proposal "flaunts the idea of separation of power, if not outright violates it."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
Right-wing activists have responded to the move with rage. Laura Loomer, a self-proclaimed Islamophobe and multiple-time failed congressional candidate who was considered for a spot on Trump's campaign, took to X to call the ouster an "abomination" and say, "I stand with Colton Moore!"
Willis is prosecuting the election racketeering case against former President Donald Trump, along with 18 of his associates and various Georgia Republican officials, for the plot to overturn the 2020 presidential election — including the appointment of fake electors, the pressure campaign on election officials to "find" extra votes, harassment of ballot counters, and breach of election equipment in Coffee County.
Trump has denied any of his efforts to challenge the Georgia election results violated the law.
