How Donald Trump ruined Christmas: I won't celebrate this year -- and he's why

It wasn't a conscious decision, but it's time for me to admit it: I've mostly given up on Christmas. It was never a holiday of great importance to me. I've never put up a Christmas tree, for instance, though I have often indulged in some tinsel and lights to mark the holiday. But for most of my adult life, Christmas still had some meaning, and I've made an effort to mark the day as somehow special. I made pancakes for breakfast. My partner and I opened gifts. We tried to make something out of it.But that has dissipated in the past couple of years. Even putting forward a minimal effort to mark the day as anything but a boring  24 hours that isn't even attached to a three-day weekend feels too hard.

The gross fact of the matter is that whatever enthusiasm I once felt for Christmas has dissipated entirely in the age of Donald Trump. He ruins everything he touches, and Christmas, for me, is no exception.

The US Constitution is an amazing document — but it won't save us from Donald Trump

The United States Constitution does not guarantee democracy.

This may be surprising. After all, we learned in school that the Constitution is the foundational source of our democracy and our freedom. As citizens living in America, we all feel a sense of security that we are free from abuse of power by the government because we know we are protected by our cherished Constitution.

After Trump's meddling in Gallagher case the Pentagon faces a big purge

There are two misconceptions about President Donald Trump. First, that he runs a totally chaotic administration and there’s no method to his madness. Second, that he is a great supporter of the military. He himself frequently brags that the U.S. military has been rebuilt and is the strongest it has ever been.

Joe Biden has 99 problems -- but Ukraine ain't one

It's time for Americans to take a closer look at former Vice President Joe Biden, the man who stands about an even chance so of becoming America’s next president. Biden has been wronged by President Donald Trump, who withheld $391 million in military aid from Ukraine while pressuring that nation's leader to announce a spurious criminal investigation into Biden’s son, Hunter. That does not mean that Biden is a saint, or that his past is free of scandals. As far as Biden is concerned, the lesson we should learn from the impeachment hearings is not that he did nothing wrong, but rather that we should separate truth from fiction. This article first appeared in SalonIf Trump is right about one thing, he's right that Biden is in a very strong position to beat him in the 2020 presidential election. Who is this man that so many Americans refer to as “Uncle Joe?”

Far-right white evangelicals — despite impeachment and the Ukraine scandal — still see Trump as ‘the Chosen One’

In the 1980s, the late Sen. Barry Goldwater — who was considered an arch-conservative in his day — famously asserted that the Republican Party was making a huge mistake by embracing the Christian Right, which he described as a “terrible damn problem” for the conservative movement. But President Donald Trump, on the other hand, enthusiastically welcomes the support of far-right white evangelicals — some of whom are declaring that the impeachment inquiry he is facing is against God’s will and that demonic forces are trying to remove the president from office.

Are Lindsey Graham's stupid stunts just meant to keep Trump quiet?

One of the more common parlor games in online political circles these days involves analyzing one of the most stunning makeovers in Senate history. I'm speaking, of course, of Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, onetime wingman to the late "maverick" John McCain, who was widely assumed to be his successor as the leading independent Republican in the U.S. Senate. Instead, for whatever set of reasons, Graham has become Donald Trump's obsequious majordomo.

Watergate shows unwavering devotion to Trump will not end well for ‘all the president’s men’

President Donald Trump will go down in history for, among many other things, being the U.S. president with the greatest number of associates who have faced criminal charges since President Richard Nixon: Michael Cohen (Trump’s former personal attorney) and Paul Manafort (his 2016 campaign manager) are both serving time in federal prison, while GOP activist Roger Stone was recently convicted of seven criminal counts and Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, awaits sentencing for lying to the FBI. All of those Trump associates ran into legal problems before the Ukraine scandal, which is only adding to Trump’s reputation for corruption — and Vanity Fair journalist Kevin M. Kruse, making a Watergate/Trump comparison, asserts that Watergate offers some history lessons for Trump loyalists.
