Hospital, county contradict DeSantis’ claim about role in Florida Keys residents' vaccines

MIAMI —After Gov. Ron DeSantis claimed “the state was not involved” in arranging for more than 1,200 Keys residents in the wealthy Ocean Reef community to get accelerated access to the COVID-19 vaccine in January, both Baptist Health South Florida — which supplied the doses — and Monroe County have contradicted his claims, saying the distribution was authorized by the state. “It is our understanding that the Medical Center at Ocean Reef asked the State of Florida for vaccine doses, and the State of Florida asked Baptist Health to take delivery of the doses to our ultra-cold freezer storage for...

Yes, the coronavirus mutates. No, that doesn’t spell doom for vaccines

SAN DIEGO — From South Africa to Brazil to California, the list of locations linked to new strains of the coronavirus is growing — and so are concerns that viral variants could undo the vaccine rollout. The worries come at a time when most Americans still haven’t received a COVID-19 vaccine. That could change by the end of May, when President Joe Biden says there will be enough vaccine for all adults in the U.S. But by then, new and faster-spreading coronavirus strains will likely account for nearly all cases. Does that mean this whole effort is for naught? Not according to local researchers w...

Senate hands Biden a win with passage of massive COVID relief bill

Early Saturday morning, after a night of frenzied negotiations, the U.S. Senate passed a massive COVID relief bill that will help out embattled states and Americans dealing with the economic devastation caused by the coronavirus pandemic that began during Donald Trump's last year in office.

Prior to the vote Politico reported, "As of Saturday morning, the Senate had been in session for more than 24 hours straight, with the vote-a-rama taking up most of the time and with several more hours to go. Senate Democrats largely stuck together throughout the night and staved off GOP efforts to drastically change the bill. While some Democrats defected on a handful of GOP amendments, those amendments required 60 votes to pass. Democrats also sidestepped a quagmire on undocumented immigrants that infuriated liberals last month after some moderates supported a proposal barring those immigrants from receiving checks. All 50 Democrats banded together to reject an amendment from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to bar relief payments from going to undocumented immigrants"

Ted Cruz smacked down for wasting time in 'testy' exchange during COVID bill negotiations: report

According to Grace Segers reporting for CBS, Democratic senators ganged up on Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) early Saturday morning for wasting time during negotiations over the COVID relief bill after he complained about a non-existent portion of the bill.

Weary senators from both parties have been haggling about amendments all night, with Segers noting the atmosphere is getting "testy."

As for Cruz, he proposed an amendment to the bill which he contended would allow undocumented immigrants to get relief checks.

After being told the bill doesn't give undocumented immigrants checks, he asked for more time which led to a chorus of exasperated "no's" from Democrats.
