'This is a no-brainer': House Democrats announce effort to pass $2,000 payments as Trump demands bigger checks

House Democrats are planning to request unanimous consent this week to approve sending one-time $2,000 direct payments to most Americans after President Donald Trump late Tuesday attacked the recently passed $900 billion coronavirus relief bill as a "disgrace" and suggested he might not sign the legislation if it isn't amended to include bigger checks.

Almost immediately after Trump's remarks—made in a video posted to Twitter on Tuesday night—Democratic lawmakers and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) embraced the president's call for $2,000 payments, with many noting that they've been demanding such relief for months. In May, Sanders teamed up with Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.) to propose $2,000 monthly payments to most Americans for the duration of the coronavirus crisis.

White House will receive special disinfection as soon as Donald Trump leaves office

It was a down-in-the-mud presidential campaign, but the dirtiest part comes on Inauguration Day.
As Joe Biden lifts his right hand to take the oath of office at noon on Jan. 20 at the Capitol, a team of specially trained cleaners will be lifting their hands to disinfect the White House. The executive mansion will get a deep clean after two COVID-19 outbreaks this fall led to President Donald Trump and members of his staff and family becoming infected.
The departure of one president and the arrival of another is always a fast but highly synchronized behind-the-scenes ballet by White House staff members and moving crews.

But this year is different. The shift means more than rearranging the Oval Office and putting new clothes in bedroom closets: It means a top-to-bottom disinfection amid a pandemic. Biden, who at 78 is taking office as the oldest president in U.S. history, is at high risk of complications from the virus.

So, the General Services Administration will oversee a thorough cleaning and disinfection of every doorknob, toilet handle, light switch, stair railing, telephone, elevator button, computer keyboard and other objects inside the 55,000-square-foot mansion at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Inside the first chaotic days of the effort to vaccinate America

One tray of COVID-19 vaccine from pharmaceutical giant Pfizer contains 975 doses — way too many for a rural hospital in Arkansas.

But with the logistical gymnastics required to safely get the Pfizer vaccine to rural health care workers, splitting the trays into smaller shipments has its own dangers. Once out of the freezer that keeps it at 94 degrees below zero, the vaccine lasts only five days and must be refrigerated in transit.

Black men have the shortest lifespans of any Americans -- and this theory helps explain why

COVID-19 has killed many young Black men with deadly efficiency. When ProPublica reporters began collecting their stories and speaking to health experts to understand why, their efforts led them to a little-known body of research that takes its name from one of the most enduring symbols of Black American resilience.

Sherman James is a social epidemiologist who has spent the past four decades exploring why Black men have higher rates of diseases that lead to shorter lifespans than all other Americans.

His conclusion is that the constant stress of striving to succeed in the face of social inequality and structural racism can cause lasting physical damage.

Trump just put McConnell in a hard position after claiming stimulus amount 'is cruel': report

President Donald Trump's video rant and veto threat on Tuesday night threw a wrench in the deal between Democrats and Republicans on the government funding package and the next round of COVID-19 stimulus funding.

Democrats have wanted a larger payment for Americans for the last seven months following their passage of the HEROES Act. Despite nine months of negotiations with Treasury Secretary Steve Munchin, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) never participated in the talks. It wasn't until the very end that the White House seemingly bowed out and McConnell took over, reducing the checks to Americans to an embarrassingly low amount. The parties agreed on a $600 check.

Trump-loving Texas AG lobbied to have his own state's COVID relief funds revoked: watchdog

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, whose efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in four swing states ended in resounding defeat, tried to get Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to revoke relief aid to his own state because elections officials used it to fund mail-in ballots, according to a watchdog group.

A letter from Paxton to Mnuchin obtained by the Center for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) shows that the Texas AG wanted Mnuchin to investigate and possibly even rescind how Harris County, Texas used relief funds provided through the CARES Act that passed earlier in 2020.

US airlines to recall furloughed staff - for now

Large US airlines say they will rehire workers laid off during the pandemic after Congress late Monday passed a new economic relief package, but one carrier warned that anemic travel demand means long-term employment prospects remain shaky.

After months of partisan wrangling Congress finally approved the $900 billion stimulus just before midnight, which includes $15 billion in airline worker support payments and requires carriers to recall involuntarily furloughed employees, provide back pay and keep the workers on payroll through March 31, 2021.
