Georgia governor sends more National Guard troops to COVID fight as cases and divisions surge

Georgia Public Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey shared a frank and disturbing snapshot of the spread of COVID-19 in the state Monday.

“We are, as I've mentioned before, a little behind some of our other southern states where we are with the delta surge, and this is indeed a delta surge," she told reporters at the Capitol. “Virtually 100% of all our cases are delta variant, and we're now approaching among the worst cases, both in case numbers and hospitalizations that we've had since January, in some cases, actually worse in some parts of the state than we were in January. Saturday, we had 12,223 total cases reported, which was one of our highest daily case rates ever reported. And all 159 of our counties are at a high transmission level. So all these areas are considered in the red zone."

Delta cutting ‘like a buzzsaw’ through Oregon-California border counties

If you live in one of the rural communities tucked into the forested hillsides along the Oregon-California border and need serious medical care, you’ll probably wind up at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. It serves about nine counties on either side of the border. It is one of three hospitals Asante owns in the region. All three ICUs are 100% full of covid patients, according to staff members. “We’ve had two deaths today. So, it’s a very grim, difficult time,” Dr. Michael Blumhardt, medical director of the hospital’s intensive care unit, said on a recent Tuesday in August. “The delta viru...

One Illinois church camp and conference led to 180 positive COVID-19 cases: CDC

CHICAGO — A central Illinois church camp and conference held in mid-June led to 180 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19, including among 29 people who were fully vaccinated, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. In late June, state health officials said 85 people had caught the illness following the camp and conference. The new CDC report includes more recent information, as of Aug. 13. The two outbreaks occurred in Schuyler and Adams counties and were tied to those who attended The Crossing Camp in Rushville, between June 13 and June 17, and a nearby men’s...

Educators are now public health workers

Most humans aspire to be leaders; few think deeply about the anxiety that comes with leadership. Superintendents, who lead school districts, are the public faces of their schools, which might be rewarding; yet they also provide the public with someone to blame in the event that something bad happens. Often that "bad" thing may be entirely out of their control, and yet they still must quietly suffer the public's wrath. Growing up in a home led by a school superintendent, I felt my father's burden secondhand; both he and other superintendents I've met seemed acutely aware of the tremendous responsibility they shouldered, and the risks that came with doing their jobs poorly.

WATCH: QAnon fan accuses Florida school board of using masks to commit child trafficking

At a recent school board hearing in Fort Myers, Florida, things went off the rails when a man walked up to the mic during a debate on COVID-19 face mask requirements and accused the board of using the masks to facilitate child sex trafficking — an apparent reference to the QAnon conspiracy theory.

"How are you doing, my name is Brian Biggs," said the man. "I want to talk about the real pandemic. Child sex trafficking. By putting masks on these kids' face, you can't identify any of them. So by the nine of you already voting on this, tells me you guys support sex trafficking."

Republican lawmaker slammed after falsely claiming hundreds of Minnesotans died of COVID vax

On Monday, Minnesota Public Radio's David Montgomery dove into a claim by Republican state Sen. Jim Abeler that there have been 212 deaths in Minnesota from the COVID-19 vaccine — a claim he made at a Minnesota anti-vaccine rally over the weekend.

"The ultimate source of his figure appears to be the CDC's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS, a database of 'information on unverified reports of adverse events (illnesses, health problems and/or symptoms) following immunization with US-licensed vaccines,'" wrote Montgomery. "Note the wording there. These are not cases where a vaccine *caused* a health problem. These are cases where someone had a health problem after getting a vaccine. The vaccine could be the cause, or it could be unrelated."
