Donald Trump sounded like a confused infant when he promised he’ll be a “day one” dictator, a prominent Republican lawmaker suggested Wednesday.

“Sometimes a little baby will spout off all sorts of words that you don’t take either literally or seriously,” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) told CNN correspondent Manu Raju Wednesday.

“That's a bit of what we're seeing from President Trump and his campaign right now.”

Romney offered this helpful tidbit hours after Trump’s eyebrow-raising remark to Sean Hannity Tuesday night as he was quizzed about fascist rhetoric comparable to that of Adolf Hitler.

“You would never abuse power as retribution against anybody?” Hannity asked Trump.

Trump restated the question, then answered it.

“He says, ‘You’re not going to be a dictator, are you?’ I said: ‘No, no, no, other than day one. We’re closing the border and we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator.’”

Romney told Raju that Trump was “firing up the base” and “entertaining people,” the CNN reporter said.

“I don't know that I attach great importance to some of the things he says,” Romney reportedly added.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) defended Trump in his comment to Raju.

“He said he would do two things: He would close the border and drill,” Tillis said. “Everybody could say that's abusing power, I think that's a righteous use of power and President Biden's failed on it.”

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) chuckled when faced with the video of Trump’s comment on Fox News.

“Many of the things that need to be done, he can do by executive order,” Cramer said.

Trump has also called his detractors “vermin,”and pledged to “punish critics” via prosecution. A confidant and former advisor reportedly said this week a new Trump’s administration would “come after” the media.

This is not the first time Trump has been compared to a baby. A Macy's Day Parade-sized blimp portrayed the former U.S. President wearing a diaper and holding a cellphone in a tiny hand.

"We’re under no illusions that this is the end of the story,” its creators reportedly said in 2021. “We hope the Trump baby serves as a reminder of the politics of resistance that took place during Trump’s time in office.”
