
Special Counsel Jack Smith has spent more than $12 million on former president Donald Trump's criminal cases, according to a new report.
Smith burned through more than $7 million in 2023 alone as he prepared to prosecute Trump on charges, according to the Washington Post’s analysis of Justice department figures.
The spending report covers April through September, during which time Smith filed two indictments against Trump in Florida and Washington D.C.

Smith contends Trump mishandled classified documents found stored in a Mar-a-Lago bathroom, among other places, and that he attempted to overturn the 2020 election
Trump has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
According to the Washington Post analysis, the bulk of the cash went toward paying the salaries of Smith’s prosecutorial team.
