Nuclear scientists hail major US fusion breakthrough

The Nuclear Ignition Facility in California is working on getting energy from nuclear fusion, where isotopes are combined, rather than split, as happens in fission

Los Angeles (AFP) - Nuclear scientists using lasers the size of three football fields said Tuesday they had generated a huge amount of energy from fusion, possibly offering hope for the development of a new clean energy source.

Experts focused their giant array of almost 200 laser beams onto a tiny spot to create a mega blast of energy -- eight times more than they had ever done in the past.

First ever federal water cuts ordered for Southwest states amid Colorado River drought

As climate change continues to exacerbate a drought in the Colorado River, the Department of the Interior has declared a shortage that will lead to the first-ever federally mandated cuts of the river’s supply to a number of states in the American Southwest. The Bureau of Reclamation, which operates within the Interior Department, said the cuts would go into effect after the drought brought the levels at Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the country’s two largest reservoirs which are fed by the Colorado River, to historically low levels. Lake Mead provides water to about 25 million people in Arizona, ...

NASA slightly improves the odds that asteroid Bennu hits Earth -- humanity will be ready regardless

If the thought of an extinction event–level asteroid hitting Earth keeps you up at night, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has relatively good news for you: the chances of asteroid Bennu striking Earth are higher than previously thought, but probably not high enough to lose sleep over. That's partly because we are getting better at spotting and calculating asteroid trajectories, but also because NASA is soon to test technology that could divert a threatening asteroid decades in advance of impact.

OAN guest tries to prove she was 'magnetized' by the COVID vaccine -- and she hilariously fails

A bizarre situation unfolded on the far-right cable network One America News on Friday as a host examined the debunked conspiracy theory that vaccinations make one magnetic.

"Here's some of the headlines," began host Dan Ball. "There's a lot of them out there, from the Miami Herald, BBC, Reuters, USA Today, all debunking it, saying that these social media folks that are putting it on are lying. It's fake. There's nothing, there's no metal, no microchip, it's all conspiracy theories -- there's no way that getting the shot would make your arm magnetic. So all the mainstream says there's no way."

Only slight chance of asteroid Bennu hitting Earth: NASA

An asteroid known as Bennu will pass within half the distance of the Earth to the Moon in the year 2135 but the probability of an impact with our planet in the coming centuries is very slight, scientists said Wednesday.

OSIRIS-REx, a NASA spacecraft, spent two years near Bennu, an asteroid that is about 1,650 feet (500 meters) wide, observing its size, shape, mass and composition and monitoring its orbital trajectory around the sun.

WATCH: Jen Psaki reminds Peter Doocy of Trump's plan to 'inject poison' into people as Covid cure

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki reminded Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy that former President Donald Trump had suggested that people inject "poison" as a cure for Covid.

At Wednesday's White House press conference, Doocy asked Psaki if President Joe Biden "created some vaccine hesitancy" by saying that he did not trust Trump's advice on fighting the pandemic.

This is the most sobering report card yet on climate change and Earth's future. Here's what you need to know

Earth has warmed 1.09℃ since pre-industrial times and many changes such as sea-level rise and glacier melt are now virtually irreversible, according to the most sobering report yet by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The report also found escape from human-caused climate change is no longer possible. Climate change is now affecting every continent, region and ocean on Earth, and every facet of the weather.

The long-awaited report is the sixth assessment of its kind since the panel was formed in 1988. It will give world leaders the most timely, accurate information about climate change ahead of a crucial international summit in Glasgow, Scotland in November.

The IPCC is the peak climate science body of the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization. It is the global authority on the state of Earth's climate and how human activities affect it. We are authors of the latest IPCC report and have drawn from the work of thousands of scientists from around the world to produce this new assessment.

Sadly, there is hardly any good news in the 3,900 pages of text released today. But there is still time to avert the worst damage, if humanity chooses to.

It's unequivocal: humans are warming the planet

For the first time, the IPCC states unequivocally — leaving absolutely no room for doubt – humans are responsible for the observed warming of the atmosphere, lands and oceans.

The IPCC finds Earth's global surface temperature warmed 1.09℃ between 1850-1900 and the last decade. This is 0.29℃ warmer than in the previous IPCC report in 2013. (It should be noted that 0.1℃ of the increase is due to data improvements.)

Blobs in space: Slime mould to blast off for ISS experiment

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station are set to welcome a most unusual guest, as "the Blob" blasts off into orbit on Tuesday.

An alien on its own planet, the Blob is an unclassifiable organism -- neither fish nor fowl. Nor is it plant, animal or fungus.

The ocean is about to flip a switch that could permanently disrupt life on Earth: study

A massive Atlantic Ocean current system, which affects climate, sea levels and weather systems around the world, may be about to be fatally disrupted.

A new report in the journal Nature Climate Change describes how a series of Atlantic Ocean currents have reached "an almost complete loss of stability over the last century" as the planet continues to warm. The report, authored by Dr. Niklas Boers, specifically analyzes data on ocean temperature and salinity to demonstrate that their circulation has weakened over the past few decades. If current trends continue unabated, they may slow to a dangerous level or even shut down entirely.

Florida's viral load is so great if it was a country the US would consider blocking travel there: doctor

Dr. Jonathan Reiner told CNN Sunday that the COVID-19 viral load is so substantial in Florida that there are only two other places on the planet that are worse: Louisiana and Botswana.

Speaking to CNN's Jim Acosta, Dr. Reiner had a sharp warning for anyone traveling to the state in the next few weeks.

26 scary photos and videos of California's Dixie fire as it becomes second largest in history — and ways to help

It has been several days but no matter how much work has been done, the Dixie Fire is still just 21 percent contained. It is the second-largest fire in state history, so far, said NPR. Thus far eight people are unaccounted for and the fires are still spreading.

The destruction path spans Butte, Plumas, Lassen and Tehama counties, according to CalFire. Thus far it has burned more than 463,000 acres, including homes, cars, farmland, historical sites and others.

Fox News report destroys network’s own hosts by revealing ‘sharply’ rising Covid deaths in children

June 23, Fox News host Tucker Carlson claimed that the World Health Organization is against children being vaccinated, despite the vaccine being approved for kids over 12. It was the same day that the CDC wrote an article dispelling myths.

"More vaccines, despite the human cost, that's their position," Carlson said of medical experts.

Dem lawmaker drops the mic with brutal demolition of 'absurd' Madison Cawthorn

Appearing on MSNBC with host Lindsey Reiser, Rep. Kim Schrier (D-WA) -- who was a pediatrician before running for office -- flattened Republican colleague Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) over his complaints about masking up children with a blunt and brutal takedown.

Sharing a clip of the young Republican claiming "You have sacrificed the social, emotional and psychological development of our children on the altar of wokeness, forcing our children to wear masks is nothing short of psychological child abuse, period." the MSNBC host asked the doctor for her response.
