A former GOP mayoral candidate from Connecticut pleaded guilty on Friday of taking part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, the Hartford Courant reported.

Gene DiGiovanni admitted entering the Capitol building for a few minutes and did not cause any damage or partake in any violence. Under his plea deal, he faces up to six months in prison and a small fine.

DiGiovanni was arrested in August after online sleuths identified him based on images and videos from that day.

"The online investigators tipped off the NBC news affiliate in West Hartford, which confronted DiGiovanni at a meeting of the Derby Board of Alderman, according to an FBI affidavit, DiGiovanni’s lawyer and others," the Hartford Courant reported.

"He told investigators he had traveled to Washington to attend Trump’s 'Stop the Steal' rally."
