A Georgia Republican got an earful from a fired-up crowd of constituents who were angry at his support for wide-ranging layoffs of federal workers and budget cuts by Donald Trump and his unelected adviser Elon Musk through the Department of Government Efficiency.
Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) held a town hall in Roswell, near the headquarters for the Centers for Disease Control, where 1,300 workers were recently removed from their posts, and a Democratic strategist told CNN he saw a historic parallel in the video of attendees blasting the lawmaker for supporting DOGE's "radical and extremist and sloppy approach" to cutting the federal budget.
"You know, that is hauntingly familiar, because in the summer of 2009, when the Tea Party was just getting going, and the summer of 2010, Democrats were facing that kind of blowback in the town hall meetings that they were going to," said Democratic strategist Matt Bennett. "I think it's going to be worse for Republicans because ... the things that these guys are cutting are things that people want and need, and it's only going to become more apparent to them as this goes on. We've only been doing this for a month."

GOP lawmakers joined Democrats in opposing cuts to a federal program overseen by the CDC that administers aid to emergency workers and others suffering from toxins related to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and Bennett said that voters will revolt once they feel the impact of DOGE cuts to other popular programs and services.
"If you look at the kinds of things that he's cutting, take for example, 9/11 first responder fund, which the Republicans proudly, you know, passed.," Bennett said. "They just cut a whole bunch of people running the first responders fund, which Republicans in New York are panicked about. So you are going to see an increasing number of House and Senate Republicans freaking out because they're going to go home and they're going to get an earful like that from their constituents saying, 'What are you doing? You're creating unemployment in our communities, and you're cutting essential services that we desperately need.'"
