Lula slams far-right 'terrorism' as Brazil clears protest camps

Brazilian security forces cleared protest camps Monday and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned "acts of terrorism" after a far-right mob stormed the seat of power in the capital, in chaotic scenes that triggered global shock.

Hundreds of soldiers and police mobilized to dismantle an improvised camp outside the army's headquarters in Brasilia where some 3,000 supporters of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro had set up tents -- used as a base for the sea of protesters who ran riot inside the presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court for around four hours Sunday.

Supreme Court denies case seeking to remove Biden and reinstate Trump

The Supreme Court has denied a longshot lawsuit from three brothers who sought to remove President Joe Biden from office and reinstate Donald Trump.

Brother Raland Brunson was listed as the plaintiff on the Supreme Court petition. The brothers said that members of Congress violated their oaths of office by failing to investigate fraud in the 2020 election.

U.S. Supreme Court lets Meta's WhatsApp pursue 'Pegasus' spyware suit

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday let Meta Platforms Inc's WhatsApp pursue a lawsuit accusing Israel's NSO Group of exploiting a bug in its WhatsApp messaging app to install spy software allowing the surveillance of 1,400 people, including journalists, human rights activists and dissidents.

The justices turned away NSO's appeal of a lower court's decision that the lawsuit could move forward. NSO has argued that it is immune from being sued because it was acting as an agent for unidentified foreign governments when it installed the "Pegasus" spyware.

McCarthy pledges repeal of IRS funding meant to target wealthy tax cheats

Soon after the U.S. House reconvenes Monday to vote on the rules package containing many of the concessions House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made to secure to votes of far-right Republicans, the party is also expected to introduce what the new leader said early Saturday would be its "very first bill": a proposal repealing new Internal Revenue Service funding meant to help audit the wealthiest Americans.

About $80 billion was included in the Inflation Reduction Act last year, with IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig saying the funding would only be used to increase audits of households making $400,000 per year or more.

Louisiana Republican Party objects to Brittney Griner prisoner swap

The Louisiana Republican State Central Committee voted Saturday to condemn the Biden administration’s prisoner swap with Russia that led to the release of basketball star Brittney Griner.

Members of the GOP committee attending their quarterly meeting in Lafayette supported a resolution condemning the Griner exchange through a voice vote. No members raised objections to the matter, once a reference to Griner being a “woke” gay woman was removed from the statement.
