Meet Russia’s oligarchs -- a group of men who won’t be toppling Putin anytime soon

U.S. President Joe Biden and other world leaders are setting their sights on Russia’s oligarchs as they seek new ways to punish Vladimir Putin – and those who have enabled him and profited from his reign – for waging war in Ukraine.

Biden singled out wealthy oligarchs in his State of the Union address, promising to “seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets.” “We are coming for your ill-begotten gains,” he said. And in the U.K., two more rich Russians were added to the nine other oligarchs who have been personally sanctioned over the invasion.

Yet who are these oligarchs, and what is their relationship with Putin? And more importantly, will eroding their wealth do anything to end the war in Ukraine?

Biden says he won’t stand for Florida’s ‘dangerous’ 15-week abortion ban

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — President Joe Biden says his administration “will not stand” for a 15-week abortion ban approved by the Florida Legislature. Pro-Putin, anti-gay and QAnon: Meet Delaware’s most embarrassing Republican

In Delaware, the most famous Democrat is President Joe Biden, who commutes between the White House and his home in that heavily Democratic state. Delaware’s most famous — or infamous — Republican, meanwhile, is far-right Christian nationalist and QAnon supporter Lauren Witzke, who drew widespread condemnation in late February when she praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as a symbol of Christian piety. But Witzke’s praise of Putin is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her extremism and her ability to embarrass the state of Delaware.

During an appearance on the Christian Right program “Cross Talk,” the 34-year-old native of Delmar, Delaware — who suffered a landslide defeat when she ran against Sen. Chris Coons in Delaware’s 2020 U.S. Senate race — made it clear that she supports Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.

NATO rejects Ukraine no-fly zone that could spark 'full-fledged war in Europe'

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Friday that the 30-country alliance will not impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine, warning that such a step would draw NATO forces into direct conflict with Russia and potentially spark "a full-fledged war in Europe."

"We are not part of this conflict, and we have a responsibility to ensure it does not escalate and spread beyond Ukraine because that would be even more devastating and more dangerous, with even more human suffering," Stoltenberg said during a press conference following a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

Biden still has supporters in rural America — but they 'suffer in silence' in fear of their neighbors: analysis

On Friday, POLITICO published a deep dive into life for Biden supporters in pro-Trump rural areas — claiming they "suffer in silence," unable to discuss politics with neighbors and fearful of reprisal for their beliefs.

"Barrels of ink have been spilled over the past seven years examining Donald Trump’s appeal in rural places like Clearfield County, an old timber and coal region situated along Interstate 80 on the western edge of central Pennsylvania," reported Christopher Caledago. "What those tales often leave out is the other side of the same coin ... Nearly 30,000 people in Clearfield County voted for Trump in 2020, roughly three-quarters of the ballots cast. But the other 25 percent who voted for Joe Biden — 9,673 people — find themselves in an unusual position: They supported the ultimate winner and yet a relentless and toxic campaign to delegitimize his victory and overturn the election makes them feel somehow as if they’re under siege."

Experts fear Wisconsin faces a dark future as Republicans push to undermine democratic norms

In his rehashing of long-debunked theories about a long-settled election in hours of testimony and a 136-page report released Tuesday, former Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman is providing the “vibes and feelings” that will allow Wisconsin Republicans to erode the state’s democratic norms, according to political scientists and election watchers.

Gableman, who has been tasked with digging into the 2020 election by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Burlington), released his report on Tuesday as he promised that his work will continue, even without a contract and after the Assembly has adjourned for the year.
