Former Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich on Thursday slammed House Republicans for shielding Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) from consequences after he posted an anime video that depicted the murder of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

While appearing on CNN, Kasich said that he was amazed to see House Republicans coddling extremists even as some of them pushed to punish Republicans who voted in favor of the bipartisan infrastructure bill.

"It is just nuts," he said. "It goes on and on in the House of Representatives, and to some degree when we see the Senate beginning to back candidates who Donald Trump was for, it looks like he is still running so much of the Republican Party. As to whether that remains in terms of the pinnacle of his power, that's yet to be seen. I hope we wake up."

Kasich went on the speculate that McCarthy is appeasing the likes of Gosar and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) because he was worried about being overthrown as GOP leader.

"You begin to wonder if he is doing this because he is really fearful that he won't be speaker," Kasich said.
