Kamala Harris is promising up to $25,000 in down payment support for first-time homebuyers, and Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance took a bizarre swipe at the proposal.

The likely Democratic nominee is unveiling her economic policy proposals Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina, including down-payment assistance to provide working families who've paid their rent on time for two years up to $25,000 toward buying their first home – and even more generous support for first-generation homeowners.

"The Biden-Harris administration proposed providing $25,000 in down payment assistance for 400,000 first-generation home buyers -- or homebuyers whose parents don’t own a home -- and a $10,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers," the Harris campaign said. "This plan will significantly simplify and expand the reach of down-payment assistance, allowing over 1 million first time-buyers per year – including first-generation home buyers – to get the funds they need to buy a house when they are ready to buy it," the Harris campaign said.

President Joe Biden had proposed a more limited subsidy intended only for first-generation home buyers, but Harris expanded that and endorsed an expansion on tax credits to incentivize housing construction and other measures to expand the housing supply – but the Republican vice presidential nominee claimed the plan was a giveaway to undocumented migrants.

"Kamala Harris wants to give $25,000 to illegal aliens to buy American homes," Vance posted on X. "This will only further exacerbate the housing shortage in our country. It's a disgrace. We should be making it easier and more affordable for American citizens to buy homes."

A number of social media users fact-checked Donald Trump's running mate.

"You just making s--- up again," said Brett Meiselas, co-founder of the left-leaning Meidas Touch Network. "Weird dude."

"Gee, Kamala Harris has a plan to make housing easier and more affordable for Americans," said X user Susan Thomas. "What is the Trump-Vance plan?"

"Vance is lying," posted photojournalist Steve Rhodes. "He should talk to people who want to buy homes, pay more in rent than a mortgage would cost, but don't have the down payment for a home. Harris also will build three million more homes. Trump promised to build, but didn't build housing."

"Fact check: not true," said X user Maile, who posted a screen shot of the Harris proposal. "They have to be working families, who qualify and pay their rent on time for 2 years first."
