House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) left onlookers aghast Tuesday as he promised more of the same if Republicans keep their congressional majority.
The Louisiana Republican is about to embark on a six-week campaign blitz through dozens of House districts across 22 states, according to Axios, as the Cook Political Report tipped 15 House races toward Democrats and predicted Republicans would need to win most of the remaining toss-up races to maintain their majority.
"What we would do in the next two years is exactly what we have been doing already, and that is putting the conditions in place for a strong America," Johnson told CNBC's "Squawk Box." "We restored not just American energy dominance and peace through strength, but a vibrant economy. The conditions are there for this to take off, and that's why the stock market indexes are high. That's why job numbers exceed expectations, the Atlanta Fed says 5.1 percent economic growth expected in the third quarter."
"That doesn't happen by happenstance," he added. "It's because we did what we say we're going to do and put in pro-growth free market principles in legislation and in federal policy. We have to continue that. We've got so much more to do and we can make things so much better. We've just got to keep going."
The Republican Party's national favorability rating hovers just under 39 percent versus 56 percent unfavorable, according to aggregates from FiftyPlusOne, essentially matching President Donald Trump's public approval, and voters say they're angry about higher costs – especially on fuel related to the war in Iran.
The speaker's comments were bashed as out of touch by online commentators.
"Protecting child predators, facilitating extra-judicial murders, jacking up everyone's prices through tariffs and military misadventures all so that Donald Trump can get rich and he doesn't yell at you is a hell of a closing message," marveled Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL). "But totally on brand for Mr. Johnson."
"Mike Johnson promises that a Republican controlled House means no oversight, no appropriations hearings, no new legislation, but lots of extended breaks and vacations so that no votes can be taken on things that bother Trump," added law professor Scott Horton.
"Which is ... what, exactly?" wondered legal analyst Steve Vladeck.
"So… taking vacations and making a mess of literally everything," predicted popular X user John Collins.
