Freepers debate whether women should be able to vote

The knuckle-dragging fantasist misogynists at the Free Republic got a hard on after reading the article "Women's Right to Vote, the Beginning of the End for America?" The premise of the piece, as the title suggests, is that once women were able to vote, it ushered in decision-making based on emotion, not logic (and the resulting destruction of society is the fault of females).

Newt converts to Catholicism - conservative says his 'sins no longer exist'

Nice try, guys. I know the 2012 slate looks a bit weak but this is an epic FAIL, with a hypocrisy meter-explosion cherry on top.

Bamboo Reviews: A Whole Buncha Books About Lady Parts, BAY-BEEZ, and Religious Morons

I've been reading a whole bunch of books examining women's rights versus the surge of religious fundamentalism (that exists in no small part to push back against women's rights, though all fundies feel like they're defending tradition and culture), but haven't had a chance to review them. So here's one big post reviewing all three new books out on the topic.

Tired Of Being A Pitiful Beanpole? Listen To Rush Limbaugh: He-Man Radio For He-Men

imageAndrew Klavan tells us that we liberals need to open our minds to Rush Limbaugh, because every single objectionable thing he's said since Bush I was in office was all the result of the vast intolerance of liberals.

Alan Keyes: President Obama is 'the living incarnation of the glamour of evil'

Gee, I think tossing your daughter out of the family home because she came out of the closet is the epitome of evil. Alan Keyes, on his blog "Alan Keyes is LOYAL TO LIBERTY," has a frothing-at-the-mouth post about Notre Dame's invitation to the president to speak and receive an honorary degree. The failed U.S. Senate and presidential candidate cannot believe his former rival, the "child sacrifice" advocate in the White House, will darken the door of the Catholic university.

Religious nuts working with global dominationists once again

What I find fascinating about the wingnuts stoking fears about a one world currency is how it's a classic example of how the rich and powerful that conservatism exists for are exploiting the paranoid but often powerless. Having read Naomi Klein's book The Shock Doctrine, I'm aware of how currency trading is used a) as another fancy way for rich people to make more money and b) to punish errant countries for perceived slights against capitalism and white supremacy. I'm sure there's many reasons to oppose it, some good and some bad, but it's incredibly relevant that the currency market is used by the powerful to control the not-powerful.

Faux News parachutes in to hassle anti-Palin bloggers in Alaska

Friend of the Blend Linda Kellen Biegal of Celtic Diva is one of several bloggers up in Alaska who warned everyone long ago about Sarah Palin and her corrupt government. Linda recently lodged an ethics complaint against the failed veep candidate and debate winkster. In the spirit of Bill O'Reilly and his attack dog producers, Faux News sent reporters to Alaska to "investigate" the charges. (Raw Story):

Irony Actually Died At 12:01 AM This Morning

The Corner is mocking a group of liberal bloggers and journalists writing on a list (allegedly) about how smart they are because I think my head just fucking exploded sorry I got some in your coffee.

Saletan responds: Lady Parts

To a degree---he links my post where I talk about the flaws in his conception of contraception education and even names his post after a commenter using the corny term "lady parts", so I'm happy to know he's reading not only blog criticisms, but also comment criticisms. He's, for better of for worse, a major voice on this issue and it would be nice if he spoke more positively about women and spent less time concerning himself with Sperm Magic. But he only addresses why the topic interests him, the implication being that some of us find it weird that a man cares so much. Honestly, I don't find it odd that a man cares so much---the issue is interesting, and historically, men have been right there with women when it comes to fighting for reproductive rights. When I go after Saletan for his masculine point of view, I'm referring to his belief in Sperm Magic and how it causes him to shove women aside in favor of analyzing, over and over, how much value we give to fetal life depending on how many cells there are. I know he's pro-choice and I know that he doesn't think abortion is murder, but he buys into the patriarchal framing of abortion as immoral to a degree, and that's what bothers me.

NC: lobbying black legislators during the Day of Action was an eye-opening experience

NOTE: I don't usually blog about North Carolina issues on Pandagon, but this post represents a good illustration of the gulf between black elected officials and those fighting for LGBT rights, particularly those of us who are black and gay. The fact is, most of them don't know many, if any out black LGBTs, and it's pretty clear that they don't like dealing with the issue -- even though some may vote the right way on some of our issues. The encounters I had when visiting my state's legislators provided a reality check on just how wide that gulf is.
