Who is more pro-motherhood? Pro-choice or anti-choice? (Hint: Pro all the way.)

For those who don't know, expecting mothers in Finland can fill out a simple form and the government sends them a really fancy "baby box" full of stuff for the baby (and a little stuff for mom), free of charge. A Finnish woman on Reddit responded to people's curiosity about this box by posting picture of what you get in it. Be jealous, American parents.

Abortion clinic protesters are there to harass, not "counsel"

One of the bits of bad faith that allowed the Supreme Court to justify ending a 35-foot buffer zone law that protected abortion clinic patients and staff is this notion that the protesters are there to "counsel" people. Using a veil of compassion as a thin cover for shaming people is a standard bit of dishonest hatefulness people who think of themselves as all pious and moral do---I love watching Christians throw a fit when I remind them that I'm from Texas and know that "I'll pray for you" means "Fuck you, you harlot"---but it was still really gross seeing the highest court in the land feign gullibility to the claim that the efforts to "help" are sincere. Particularly so since the premise of the "help" that harassers at clinics are offering is offensive on its surface: They are operating under the assumption that women entering an abortion clinic, by virtue of our gender, are simply too stupid to know what an abortion is. Often they wave pictures of babies at women as if to say, "Did you know you won't get one of these soon if you do this?" No shit, assholes. It's the point.

Conservatives object to giving women "permission" from employers to get reproductive health care

Welp, over the break things went from bad to worse. One of the hopes---which I still think will come to pass---is that the HHS will manage the Hobby Lobby decision by simply saying that corporations who don't want to offer contraception coverage in their health care plans will simply fill out a form saying so and then the insurance companies will simply offer the coverage directly. But conservative forces, alarmed at any move that makes contraception easier for women to get, have decided that filling out a form declaring your religious beliefs is, in and of itself, a violation of those religious beliefs. And while the court held out the form-filling as an excellent workaround for the problem in the Hobby Lobby decision, they're now looking like they're going to allow institutions to opt out of that, too. Dahlia Lithwick reports:

Over the holiday

I'll be taking the next few days off, back on Monday, for the holiday and for travel. But to hold you over, here is a video of me on MSNBC on Tuesday, talking about the Hobby Lobby case.

Dumb conservative dudes weigh in on Hobby Lobby, remind us they don't know how contraception works

Ladies, I may not know how female anatomy works, but I figure that you can only get pregnant if you like sex too much. No, put that biology book down. Did you notice I'm a man? I don't need to know how this stuff works to opine about it.

Anti-feminists are outraged that feminists argue you should only kiss people who are kissing you back

Rape apologists are all up in arms over new efforts to clarify the definition of "consent" in California to make it harder for rapists to operate without any pushback. Cathy Young, professional female misogynist and sister-punisher, is all pissed off because state Senator Kevin De Leon is pushing a bill that would require universities to adopt an "affirmative consent" standard, requiring people to only have sex with people they know want to sex them back. Young whines that this standard of "everyone is into any sex that happens" is "creeping Big-Sisterism that seeks to legislate 'correct' sex", apparently preferring a broader definition of "correct" sex where putting your dick where it's not wanted is A-OK. I'd love to see her broaden the generosity she takes with female bodies to other social interactions. If I, say, go to Cathy Young's house and walk in without knocking and sit on her couch and fart mightily into it while asking her if she could grab me a beer, she can't, you know, throw a fit, right?  I mean, she didn't say no---in part because she had no idea I was coming, but you know, details---and we don't want to be Big Sister who is all bossing me around about the "correct" way to socialize.

Does your indignation meet George Will's approval? A test to find out.

Every time I think George Will has reached a new level of lacking self-awareness, I have to check myself and remember, no, he's always been this big of an obtuse fathead. But truly, this quote during his indignant, pouty-pants defense of his column where he tried to shame rape victims into silence was a thing of wonder: "Today, for some reason, indignation is the default position of certain people. I think it has something to do with the internet." Yes, and probably that new-fangled rock-and-roll music he hears so much about.
