TX: Creationist nominated by Rick Perry denied chair of State Board of Ed

People in the Lone Star State are tired of the bible beating flat-earth set trying to slip "intelligent design" into the public schools. One big proponent of this kind of misinformation, Republican Don McLeroy, saw his nomination by Rick Perry to head up the Texas State Board of Ed drop-kicked by the state Senate. (Dallas Morning News):

Bamboo Review: Drag Me To Hell

Let me be the first to say that when I saw the previews for "Drag Me To Hell", I was skeptical. The trailer played it like a straight horror film just like the gazillions that come out now, where the pleasure is in watching some young woman chewed up and tortured, for no apparent reasons outside of sheer misogyny. That Sam Raimi was attached to it depressed me even more, because the trailer made it seem like he was finally and completely selling out his roots in cheeky, imaginative horror film-making. And too bad, because a good horror movie can be a lot of fun, but good horror movies are few and far between.

The Teaches of Pigges

Okay, this has been out for a year, so you've probably already seen it, but if you haven't (I hadn't), it's awesome. Miss Piggy singing "Fuck The Pain Away":

Two-faced Sotomayor claims to dislike Brussel sprouts; concedes that they are a healthy food

This hit piece against Sotomayor by Sharon Thiemer that the AP chose to run is breathtaking in its perfection in the art of either stupidity or intellectual dishonesty, though I can't tell which one it is. The premise is that Sotomayor is two-faced, because she claims to have lived in a housing project as a child, but now she actually accepts a salary for her work as if she was a judge on the federal appeals court or something. The other reason is that she's Latina, but refuses to believe that this automatically makes her stupid. And lest you think I'm kidding, witness the travesty.

Friday Genius Ten "Countdown To The Apology" Edition

Senator John Cornyn distanced himself from Limbaugh and Gingrich on the ridiculous issue of whether or not Sonia Sotomayor is a "racist", which is apparently the new wingnut term for "anyone who doesn't believe that white men are superior to everyone else". So now it's just a matter of time before he apologizes, I suppose. I'm beginning to wonder if the whole push against Limbaugh/apologize to Limbaugh thing is a strategy to appear to both be a moderate and pander to the wingnut base. If so, it's an epic fail, since it just makes Republican politicians look shady. Or shadier than they already do, and weak to boot.

An experiment in swallowing some knee-jerk animosity

Like Amy Benfer, my initial reaction to this piece about the trials and tribulations of being beautiful by Elizabeth Wurtzel was to be annoyed and to write Wurtzel off as a self-centered mess who would do well to learn a little humility. But then I read the comments underneath and was even more repulsed by the way many of them reflect the belief that good-looking women should be seen and not heard, and that there's nothing interesting a beautiful woman could ever have to say about being beautiful. Shit like this:

They Just Want Her To Feel Warm

imageThe most appalling thing about the conservative reaction to Sonia Sotomayor isn't the particular bits of racism and bigotry directed towards her; it's the way she's being used to launch a broadside jihad against Hispanics and minorities as a whole. Case in point, Thomas Sowell:

How come people aren't so scared and resentful anymore?

Paul Krugman has an interesting post up about how Republican identity politics aren't working as well as they used to, and that's causing them to flail about, unable to get their shit together. For a long time, the conservative argument has been, "Vote for us and we'll protect you from the rising tide of intellectuals, non-white people, gays, and women who don't know their place. We know that you often feel small and unmanned just because you're ignorant and fearful of difference, but we're here to tell you that being ignorant and fearful are the marks of True Manhood. As proof, we have George Bush, who will show you the outline of his cock through a fighter pilot uniform, to show that he has one." You'd think that sort of premise would have a narrow following, but it turns out that if you cobble together people who felt left out of the sexual revolution, the proudly stupid, the racists, and men who live in constant fear that someone's going to find out that they're actual pussies, you had enough to put together a coalition that won elections.

Prop 8 crazy in the mailbag

I love it when we receive truly deranged emails like this. At once insulting and hilarious, you have to imagine why this person is even reading this blog if they are so completely unnerved by what is said here. How embarrassing is this missive?

It's crass to mention race, unless you're holding it against someone

One of the most fascinating things about watching the identity politics meltdown on the right after Sonia Sotomayor's nomination is the blithe assumption that men don't have a gender and white people don't have a race. It's the sort of thing people talk about a lot in abstract theoretical terms, but now you're seeing it play out in real life.
