DeSantis’ administration tells universities to detail spending on transgender care

MIAMI — At the urging of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ budget office, Florida’s public universities are being required to submit detailed information on services they provide to people seeking gender-affirming treatment. The request comes weeks after DeSantis and House Speaker Paul Renner issued a similar demand for records on how much each university spends on diversity initiatives and activities related to critical race theory. It also follows action in November by Florida’s medical boards to prohibit doctors from performing surgical and other gender-affirming treatments on patients under 18 years old....

How DeSantis 'could potentially transform American society'

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has become well-known for his efforts to incite culture wars and influence the politics of education across Florida as he considers running in the 2024 presidential election.

In doing so, the potential GOP candidate has violated the First Amendment in numerous ways over the course of his gubernatorial reign, Vox Senior Correspondent Ian Millhiser reports. Millhiser offered an analysis of the ways DeSantis consistently violates the U.S. Constitution by enacting laws that blatantly challenge and disregard freedom of speech and expression.

Ron DeSantis pushes bill permanently banning COVID-19 mandates in Florida

Florida's GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing a bill that would permanently ban COVID-19 mitigation measures in his state, NBC News reports.

The bill would forever ban masking requirements in schools and businesses, and so-called vaccine passports showing proof of inoculation. It would also prevent employers from hiring or firing workers based on their vaccine status and would ban the firing or de-licensing of medical professionals who disagree with COVID-19 protocols.

A group of top Michigan Republicans are pressing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to enter the 2024 presidential race, and the state House floor leader Bryan Posthumus personally hand-delivered a letter asking him to run.

The letter was signed by 18 GOP members of the state House, a quarter of the party's caucus, calling the governor "uniquely and exceptionally qualified" to replace President Joe Biden in the White House -- although it stops short of endorsing DeSantis over Donald Trump, according to excerpts provided by a Posthumus spokesperson to Politico.

Kristi Noem puts Ron DeSantis on notice while crowing about her 'aggressive' abortion restrictions

While Florida Governor Ron DeSantis starts trying to widen his base for a possible run for President in 2024, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem wants to make sure that DeSantis not only stays true to his anti-abortion electoral base, but wants DeSantis to help lead their group of right-wing conservative governors to make an even stronger position to restrict abortion.

Recent reports have suggested that Noem was given a blessing from former President Donald Trump to begin a 'one-way feud' with DeSantis, who has emerged as Trump's chief potential rival for the presidency in 2024.

How DeSantis and Abbott advanced their 'radical conservatism' with 'an eye beyond their states': report

The 2022 midterms went much better than expected for the Democratic Party, with Democrats slightly increasing their U.S. Senate majority and winning key gubernatorial races in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona. Republicans flipped the U.S. House of Representatives, but their new House majority under Speaker Kevin McCarthy is only in the single digits — not the 40-seat or 50-seat supermajority that pundits at Fox News and Fox Business were predicting.

However, two states where Democrats suffered major disappointments were Florida and Texas. Florida is known for close elections, but Gov. Ron DeSantis campaigned from the far right and was reelected by 19 percent. MSNBC’s Joy Reid has argued that Florida shouldn’t be considered a swing state anymore — it has become a full-fledged red state.

North Carolina House Republicans advance a new kind of bathroom bill

It’s been almost seven years since North Carolina Republican lawmakers and then-Gov. Pat McCrory hastily concocted and enacted House Bill 2 – the infamous “bathroom bill.” It targeted transgender people for ignorant, mean-spirited and altogether absurd discrimination, while simultaneously making the state the target of numerous boycotts and countless late-night TV one-liners.

The bill was later repealed but its legacy – as an embarrassment to be forgotten as quickly as possible for most people, and as a proud rallying point for the state’s religious right fringe (and reactionary culture warriors everywhere), lingers on. Across the country, efforts to make life harder for transgender people, and even to criminalize efforts to provide them medically necessary healthcare, continue apace. North Carolina state Treasurer Dale Folwell has been an especially avid and energetic devotee of this brand of discrimination.

Trump gave Kristi Noem his blessing to declare 'one-way feud' with Ron DeSantis: report

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and her allies are taking potshots at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — and according to The Daily Beast, she has the explicit backing of former President Donald Trump to do so.

"Earlier this month, Noem’s press secretary, Ian Fury, took a shot at DeSantis seemingly from out of nowhere. Fury sent a follow-up email to the National Review for an article ostensibly about 'the transgender lobby’s outsized influence in South Dakota.' Fury went on a tirade — against DeSantis," reported Jake Lahut.
