According to newly released court documents, Rudy Giuliani testified that he represented Donald Trump for free after the 2020 election because Trump "ordered me to do it," Business Insider reports.

As Insider points out, Giuliani filed dozens of lawsuits on behalf of the Trump campaign's efforts to contest the results of the 2020 election -- all of which were thrown out by federal judges, and later sparked a series of defamation lawsuits targeting Giuliani and others representing the Trump campaign.

In the court documents, a Dominion Voting Systems' lawyer asked Giuliani if he was ever paid by the Trump campaign. Giuliani replied that he had only been reimbursed for his expenses. When asked why he would work for free, Giuliani said because Trump asked him to.

"The president — the president ordered me to do it," Giuliani replied.

Giuliani went on to say that Trump called him into the Oval Office on "either the 4th or the 5th" of November 2020 and told him to "go over and take over the campaign, tell them you're in charge."

According to court documents, that's when Giuliani's attorney advised him not to disclose information about his conversation with Trump that could be protected by attorney-client privilege.

"It doesn't matter if he made the statement. Don't disclose it if it's attorney/client privilege," Giuliani's attorney Joe Sibley said.
