GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) set the record for the longest House of Representatives speech in modern history after speaking over 8 1/2-hours on Thursday evening and Friday morning.

McCarthy was seeking to delay a vote on the Build Back Better Act, which passed hours after his speech ended.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) blasted his GOP Leader's speech as a waste of time.

"So while we heard Leader McCarthy speak for a great duration of time, it was like a really long death rattle. The outcome was already determined as a consequence of poor leadership and poor strategy," Gaetz said.

The comments occurred even though Gaetz praised McCarthy's speech as it was occurring.

The Florida Republican's comments come against the backdrop of Gaetz pushing Donald Trump to be Speaker of the House if Republicans win the 2022 midterms. Under congressional rules, Trump does not need to be elected to Congress by voters to be elected Speaker by members.

Previously, Gaetz has suggested Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
