President Donald Trump’s latest update to his plans for his proposed 250-foot arch in Washington, D.C., making it a "military complex", pushed MS NOW’s Jonathan Lemire over the edge on Monday morning.
Over the weekend, the president stated on Truth Social that his controversial arch would "house, store, and have the rapid ability to use large numbers of drones, plus Snipers, on both the roof and plaza areas, and additionally have and hold large quantities of sniper ammunition in storage."
On MS NOW’s Morning Joe, co-host Joe Scarborough suspected the president is “making it up” to justify the construction of the arch, which is widely opposed, including by veterans’ organizations.
Given his chance to weigh in, the incensed Lemire did not hold back.
“Let's be clear: this is insane!” he remarked. “When he was just going to build a ballroom for events, there was pushback. And then he said, well, we'll use it as a secure facility too, and that allowed more Republicans to get on board, authorize funding, and the like. And he's clearly returning to that playbook here.”
“You know, suggesting there would be drone ports on this arch and, yes, storage facility for sniper bullets, and there would be teams of snipers up on the roof. For who? For what?” For when Virginia invades the district,” he exclaimed. “I mean, it's ridiculous. And it distracts from what is something that no one in D.C. wants. As we have said on the show time and again, that is a sacred space between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.”
“Even last week, in a court filing, the Trump administration, Joe, acknowledged that the arch would be a distraction from other historic sites in the region, namely the cemetery,” he added. “They acknowledge the construction would disrupt the solemn practice of military funerals in the cemetery. That is perhaps our most hallowed ground. That cemetery, this arch is an obscenity, and this is a nonsensical justification.”
