Donald Trump may have won New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation Republican primary, but MSNBC's Claire McCaskill said his tighter-than-expected margin of victory over Nikki Haley revealed some "cracks in the armor."

The former president easily defeated Haley, who vowed to remain the race after doing a bit better than expected, and the "Morning Joe" contributor said Trump appears weaker in numerous ways.

"I just think we have to keep reminding everyone, this guy is not well, and what's up with the orange face?" McCaskill said. "I mean, has anybody checked to see, is he applying this cheap bronzer to his face in clumps at various times of the day and night and does not realize it makes him look like he's really unwell. He's a different shade every day."

"He's confused, he's angry, and by the way, cracks in the armor appeared last night," McCaskill added. "According to Donald Trump he's the incumbent, right? He won four years ago? If you're the incumbent and can't manage more than 50 percent of the vote in your own party, you are one weak sister and it is not good for him that he did as poorly as he did. The polls were wrong. They said he was going to win by 20 or 30, and he won by just over 10. Frankly there hasn't been a great enthusiasm, hasn't been a good turnout in Iowa or New Hampshire."

Haley may have stumbled on a winning strategy in the lead-up to New Hampshire, when she highlighted Trump's apparent mental instability, and and the state's primary revealed the ex-president had lost many of his former supporters and independent voters.

"[President Joe] Biden got a lot of data last night for those Republicans that will never vote for Trump, those independents who don't want Trump, and that's the key to the kingdom in this election – finding those moderate Republicans and independent voters," McCaskill said. "We're going to solidify the base, I'm confident of that. Bad night for Donald Trump, really bad night."
