During an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," former U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade was asked about a decision on Thursday by Maine's secretary of state to bar Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot and how the Supreme Court will react to it.

Speaking with host Willie Geist, McQuade praised Secretary of State Shenna Lee Bellows for her reading of the 14th Amendment and use of testimony from the House select committee on the Jan. 6 riot to arrive at her decision.

Asked about the conservative-dominated Supreme Court ruling for Trump to be left on all ballots nationally, she cautioned it was no slam dunk that the former president will prevail if he loses at the appeals court level.

"I think they will take it up in Colorado or one of these other states and will decide it relatively quickly," she told the MSNBC host. "I know there are some who think the court is in the bag for Donald Trump, but I don't think that's right."

She continued, "I think they may be very conservative, but I don't know that means they are pro-Trump necessarily or would decide in his favor just because he is the Republican nominee or the likely Republican nominee."

"I think these are challenging questions of law, things that have not really been addressed by the Supreme Court before. I think there are sound legal reasons to find that Donald Trump is not qualified to be on the ballot."
