For all of the reporting that Sen. J.D. Vance has become a major drag on the Republican's 2024 presidential ticket due his disparaging comments about women young and old, a new poll illustrates that any hopes that Donald Trump has of attracting Black voters may be unfulfilled.
And for that, he can blame the Ohio Republican he chose as his running mate.
As noted by the perceptive Greg Sargent at The New Republic, a poll on the popularity of vice presidential candidates Vance and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) conducted by The Washington Post, ABC News, and Ipsos indicates there are few demographic groups who have a positive view of Vance.
Most striking is how unpopular he is with Black voters with numbers that make his lack of support from women look encouraging.

As Sargent pointed out, "He is viewed favorably by only 32 percent of women, versus 40 percent unfavorably (interestingly, Vance fares a tad worse among men)," before adding, "He is viewed favorably by only 9 percent of Blacks, versus 50 percent unfavorably."
With that out of the way, he wrote, "This is the trade-off that Trump made in picking Vance: Brimming with certainty that he would win by a landslide before Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic candidate, Trump chose a running mate who would juice his base, with little concern about his lack of appeal to voters outside it. That hubris, a key weakness of MAGA, has, by encouraging the Vance pick, seemingly produced a serious mistake."
