FBI reportedly uncovered an extremist group that pursued 'bomb-building' in Jan. 6 case

The more the FBI investigates the January 6 insurrection, the more disturbing the information becomes. That includes the case of Virginia resident Fi Duong, who was recently arrested for his alleged involvement in that attack, and people he associated with as part of a "Bible study" group. Duong, a 14-page FBI document alleges, was pursuing "bomb-building" and had a "cache of weapons" in the months following the insurrection.

According to CNN reporters Hannah Rabinowitz and Katelyn Polantz, "The startling new case, landing six months after the pro-Trump insurrection, adds to the more than 500 Capitol riot federal criminal cases already in court and fleshes out what's known about the Justice Department's understanding of the continued interests of right-wing extremists to allegedly interfere with the U.S. government and discuss with each other how to do so. The new case highlights one group member's apparent interest in a second American civil war."

Biden pressured to act on 'Russian' ransomware, hacking

Top US officials met at the White House on stopping ransomware Wednesday, as pressure mounted on President Joe Biden to take action against Russia over cyberattacks.

New Oath Keeper arrest: David Moerschel joined Capitol riot 'stack' and stashed rifle at 'QRF' hotel in  Ballston

A 12th member of the Oath Keepers military-style "stack" formation that ascended the east steps on Jan. 6 and entered the US Capitol has been charged with conspiracy in the government's widening investigation of the militia group.

David Moerschel, a 43-year-old resident of Punta Gorda, Fla., was arrested by an FBI task force officer in Fort Myers on July 2, according to court documents. He went before a magistrate judge in Fort Myers on the same day, and was released on condition that he not possess any devices that allow communication, with an exception for work.

America is 'on the brink of collapse': Historian breaks down the post-conservative right's most glaring contradiction

Historian Joshua Tait is known for focusing on the history of conservatism in the United States. Ask Tait about the influence of the late William F. Buckley or the platform of President Ronald Reagan's 1980 campaign, and he can recite chapter and verse. But Tait has major issues with Trumpism, and in an article published by The Bulwark on July 6, he addresses one of Trumpism's glaring contradictions: claiming to have an "unapologetic" love of the United States while expressing an intense hatred of half of its populace.

"How is it that we hear the loudest jingoistic yelps from dismal patriots who cannot stand the state of the nation and half the people in it?," Tait argues. "Traditionally, the conservative right has prided itself on its heightened patriotism in contrast to the 'cosmopolitan' left…. An influential set of Trumpist intellectuals shows such disdain for progressives and 'elites,' and the country they supposedly corrupted, that their grandiose professions of love for country ring hollow."

‘Parade of horribles’: Abbott slammed for calling lawmakers back to increase voter suppression and attack trans kids

Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott is under fire after issuing a proclamation calling the state legislature back into session, giving them just 24 hours to prepare, and as the head of one progressive organization called it, a "laundry list of demands." That "laundry list" focuses on 11 issues, none of which include fixing Texas' power grid, or the low quality of education the state allows.

Abbott, who is facing a tough re-election campaign, is in trouble. The University of Texas at Austin's Texas Polling Project shows he should be worried about his approval rating (dropping), his disapproval rating (increasing), and perhaps worst of all, the undecideds. Those numbers are dropping, meaning he has less of a pool of voters to swing over to his side.

BIG VALLEY: California Proud Boys use secretive network to promote 'their white supremacist agenda' -- and go largely unscathed

Nationally, the Proud Boys organization is being tested by the ongoing prosecution of some of its top leaders for conspiracy in the assault on the US Capitol and internal dissension over the revelation that its chairman is a longtime federal informer.

But as the weight of state prosecution and media scrutiny bears down on the national leadership, the organization remains active and viable in many parts of the country — an indication that the future of the violent nationalist gang in the Biden era might focus on deepening engagement with local fights rather than highly publicized national-scale operations. California's Central Valley, where a 275-mile span of Highway 99 from Sacramento to Bakersfield allows members from various Proud Boys chapters to reinforce each other in varied local confrontations with leftist adversaries, provides one example.

Experts fear Trump backers are rejecting vaccines to spite Biden: 'It shouldn't be political'

The coronavirus is ravaging Missouri, where fewer than one in four residents is fully vaccinated -- and all but three counties backed Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

Sharp partisan divides are showing up in vaccination rates on a state-by-state and county-by-county basis, with an unwillingness to be inoculated seen by many as a show of loyalty to the twice-impeached one-term president, and that hesitancy is helping to seed new outbreaks in conservative regions with the arrival of the highly contagious delta variant.

Pentagon defends secretive exit from Afghan airbase

The US military confirmed Tuesday that it did not give Afghan officials the precise time troops would abandon the strategic Bagram air base for security reasons, even as it left the facility open to looters.

According to reports, Afghan military officials, including the general who will run the base in the future, complained that they were not told in advance that US forces would leave in the early hours last Friday.

'Democracy will be on the ballot': Analysis shows 1/3 of GOP midterm candidates embrace Trump election lies

Underscoring the extent to which the increasingly anti-democratic GOP has embraced former President Donald Trump's groundless and dangerous accusations of widespread voter fraud in last year's presidential race, a new analysis by the Washington Post shows that hundreds of Republican candidates expected to compete in upcoming contests have endorsed Trump's "big lie" that the 2020 election was stolen.

"What's really frightening right now is the extent of the effort to steal power over future elections."
—Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold

Marjorie Taylor Greene again uses Holocaust and Nazi references in paranoid anti-vaxx attack on Joe Biden

It was just three weeks ago that U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene apologized to the nation for her Holocaust references, claiming after visiting the Holocaust Museum, “I have made a mistake...the Holocaust is – there's nothing comparable to it."

"There are words that I have said and remarks that I have made that I know are offensive," she said June 14 (photo), to fend off a censure resolution, which Rep. Bradley Schneider (D-IL) decided to not file after her apology.

GOP has 'virtually no chance' of winning in 2024 if it follows Trump down election conspiracy rabbit hole: McConnell advisor

On Tuesday's edition of CNN's "OutFront," longtime Mitch McConnell adviser Scott Jennings, a staunchly conservative Republican, warned that Republicans could derail any effort to unseat President Joe Biden if their only message is to parrot former President Donald Trump's "Big Lie" that the 2020 election was stolen from them.

"You're in Michigan, a state that he lost by 150,000 votes, and the message is he won," said anchor Erin Burnett. "As a strategy perspective, is that really a winning message? Is it going to work?"
