Joe Biden shuts down Peter Doocy for shouting question about FBI at student loan event

President Joe Biden responded to an off-topic question about the FBI from Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy during an announcement about student loan forgiveness.

At an event on Wednesday, Biden said that the federal government would forgive $10,000 in student loans for people making less than $125,000 annually. People who received Pell grants qualify for $20,000 in loan forgiveness, he said.

Donald Trump Jr. calls Biden student loan forgiveness a 'slap in the face'

Donald Trump Jr. attacked President Joe Biden's student loan forgiveness plan on Wednesday. Biden announced his plan to forgive $10,000 in student loans for borrowers earning less than $125,000 per year and an additional $10,000 for Pell Grant recipients.

"Canceling student debt is a tax on the most responsible people in the country. Forcing people who worked hard to repay their loans or those who didn't have the luxury of going to college, to subsidize people who wasted $ on worthless gender study degrees is a slap in the face," he wrote.

Are primary elections showing a significant shift that could foreshadow Republican failures in November?

Over the past year, a few special elections for congressional seats have shown that the Republican Party isn't as enthusiastic as the Democrats appear to be in the election and it's hurting their results.

After the New York 19th Congressional District special election on Tuesday, numbers guru Steve Kornacki detailed that the once Republican seat that flipped to Democrats had a significantly higher turnout among Democratic voters than in previous elections. Pat Ryan won the district that is being seen as a bellwether because it has traditionally been a Republican district.

Coming off her loss for reelection, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has vowed to do “whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office.”

That, apparently, includes running for president in 2024. During an appearance on NBC News last week, Cheney admitted it was something she was thinking about.

Democrats have seized the momentum — now that needs to flow down-ballot

Reports of Democrats' midterm death may be greatly exaggerated. In fact, Democrats have momentum. Public reaction to the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision has demonstrated the deep unpopularity of Republican abortion restrictions, including Kansas voters' recent and resounding rejection of a change to the state constitution that would have made an abortion ban possible. And a summer of explosive Jan. 6 hearings has shown the depths to which MAGA Republicans aim to go in dismantling democracy. Meanwhile, the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act has been a tremendous victory. FiveThirtyEight now has Democrats ahead on the generic ballot.

Democrats have a path to retain control in Washington. But the fight must be for much more than that. From abortion access to fair elections, state legislatures are increasingly the venues that control ever-broader swaths of our social, economic, and personal lives. Building progressive power in state legislatures is a key to securing the very future of our civil rights and democracy. Remember: whoever we elect to legislatures this year will be in office during the critical post-2024 election period.

'The horror stories are piling up;' CNN analyst explains how abortion bans are blowing up in Republicans' faces

On Wednesday, a CNN panel discussed the Democratic victory in the special election for New York's 19th congressional district, a race that for weeks had been believed to be leaning toward Republicans — and the implications for the GOP abortion stance after Democratic candidate Pat Ryan ran a campaign that put the issue front and center.

The saga, some panelists suggested, is a sign that Republicans are being hurt by overreach on the issue, as near-total abortion bans around the country produce shocking stories — like the Louisiana woman forced to carry a headless fetus to term.

GOP governors bus migrants to blue cities, but many exit in red states

Since April, thousands of migrants have arrived by bus in New York City and Washington, D.C., sent north by Republican governors in Texas and Arizona as a political gambit to blame Democrats for the migrants’ presence in the country. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey have spent millions of dollars transporting the migrants to the liberal cities to protest President Joe Biden’s intention to roll back some pandemic-era border restrictions and Democratic immigration policies more generally. But increasingly the migrants are hopping off the buses before reaching Washington and New...

Democrats celebrate win in US vote seen as litmus test on abortion rights

Democrats were Wednesday celebrating victory in a US special election being viewed as the last bellwether of the public mood on abortion ahead of November's midterms, as the party seeks to make reproductive rights a key issue in the campaign.

Tuesday's vote in a swing district in upstate New York was to choose a candidate to serve the final months of Democrat Antonio Delgado's term in the House of Representatives, after he quit to become the Empire State's lieutenant governor.

From crudité to swipes over an allowance, trolling has become a US Senate campaign staple

From trolling over crudité to making swipes over an allowance, the ongoing social media feud between Lt. Gov. John Fetterman and celebrity heart surgeon Mehmet Oz has become a U.S. Senate campaign staple.

The Democratic and Republican nominees in Pennsylvania’s race have had no problems going head-to-head online, using their respective platforms to promote policy, troll each other, and fundraise.

But their approaches have led to different results in the race to replace retiring GOP U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey.

Critics call BS on the 'Let Trump walk to save democracy' crowd

Amid a flurry of recent claims that prosecuting former President Donald Trump for various alleged crimes would be too dangerous for American democracy, progressive critics are pushing back forcefully to argue that the authoritarian threat will only increase if such lawbreaking is not held to account.

"The Republican Party has turned itself against electoral democracy."
