The unlikely alliance between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) may be on thin ice as she is defying his calls to fund the federal government and prevent a shutdown.
Semafor reports that even though Greene has stuck closely by McCarthy throughout his speakership, that partnership now looks "wobbly" as she and other Republican hardliners put the party on the path of shutting down the government next week.
The latest drama comes as Greene has vowed to vote against any bill that contains any funding to help Ukraine to defend itself against Russia's military invasion, and McCarthy has said that money earmarked for Kyiv would be "too difficult" to remove from spending packages.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
Added to this, Greene seems to be taking cues from former President Donald Trump, who has made maximal demands of House Republicans to shut down the government until they defund special counsel Jack Smith's probe.
"Greene also told reporters last week she was planning to introduce an amendment that would strip the Justice Department of its ability to fund special counsel investigations, threatening to throw another kink into the budget effort," writes Semafor. "Greene can almost always be counted on to align with Donald Trump. And now that he’s openly rooting for a shutdown unless Republicans 'GET EVERYTHING,' she might just take the same attitude."
