Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was booed over the weekend during an appearance at a Donald Trump rally. He's the latest casualty in Trump's long history of eating careers.
Whether Michael Cohen, Rudy Giuliani or Christina Bobb, the revolving door of Trump lawyers led to mockery, with foes claiming MAGA stands for "making attorneys get attorneys."
"So why were the Trump fans relentless in booing their senator?" asked Alicia Menendez during a panel discussion on MSNBC on Monday. "Because he is not Trumpy enough."
She cited a local news reporter who asked one supporter about it. He said he was tired of Graham's "wishy-washiness."
Former Republican Rep. David Jolly (FL), also appearing on MSNBC, called it "painful" to watch.
"I'll tell you this about Lindsey Graham," Jolly prefaced. "I was with Lindsey in Saudi Arabia, and in a meeting with the king, Lindsey Graham says to the king of Saudi Arabia, 'Don't worry about Donald Trump. Presidents come and go, but senators stay forever.' And that little vignette told me a lot about Lindsey Graham. Someone who likely plans to expire in the U.S. Senate rather than retire from it. So, he has compromised and sacrificed his own dignity and his own political consistency to try to follow the path to power, to stay in the U.S. Senate."
He called it "emblematic" of the Republican Party as a whole.
"They know that Donald Trump has this iron grip on the party," Jolly said. "It is post-ideological. It is grievance. Call it populism if you want. The party has decided to look past all of the faults of Donald Trump. He's their guy. So, when Lindsey Graham said in 2016, 'If you want to make America great again, tell Donald Trump to go to hell.' Right now he is saying help me get Donald Trump to the White House because Lindsey Graham is doing what every other Republican has done, which is to elevate Donald Trump."
"Adjacent to him are the Mitch McConnells and Bill Barr who today will condemn Donald Trump, but will also tell you they'll support him in November if he is the nominee."
During the panel discussion, former New Hampshire Republican Party chair Jennifer Horn made fun of Graham, too, saying that his little plea for cash for Trump on Fox was like watching a crying televangelist asking for "a dollar or a prayer for Donald Trump. Begging, literally begging people to send a dollar for Donald Trump."
"It's such a weak moment," said Horn. "It's so weakening to see that from Lindsey Graham. And I think that's what makes it so easy for Trump supporters to cut Graham loose. They see Trump as a strong man, you know, as the guy who is going to beat them all. After all, the government is coming after Trump, so they can then get to his supporters. And Trump is the strongman who is protecting them from the deep state. And Graham has just weakened himself publicly to such a degree that even Donald Trump supporters can't abide by him anymore."
