Sen. Lindsey Graham was shredded on social media Wednesday after his take on the Republican Party's tolerance went viral.
“The bottom line is Conservatives are tolerant,” Graham (R-SC) said on Fox & Friends Wednesday morning. “We are kind of get-out-of-your-business, ‘you leave me alone, I’ll leave you alone.’”
Graham — a high-ranking Republican who has thrown his support behind book bans and defended the Confederate flag — was discussing a New York bill that would mandate fast food restaurants that operate in publicly-owned spaces remain open on weekends.
The bill references Chick-fil-A specifically, as its Christian owner Truett Cathy bans work on Sundays. Chick-fil-A has been the subject of controversy for years over donations to anti-LGBTQ+ groups and, as former workers contend, served as a safe space for “people who hate.”
Graham decried the proposed bill — which targets eateries on public highways and which sponsor Assembly Member Tony Simone (D) says is intended to improve service for weekend travelers — as a prime example of Democratic intolerance.
“If you can have a Satan club in high school surely they can close on Sunday because they believe it’s the Lord’s day,” Graham said. “We’re not going to give into this…this is God’s chicken.”
X user Acyn shared the video with followers, who were stunned by Graham’s interpretation of tolerance.
“Yeah,” @Reelect_Biden wrote, “tolerant of corruption and insurrection.”
"Unless you're gay,” added Michael VanDerMar. “Or transgender. Or have a vagina. Or want to read certain books. Or..."
Rose Benson wanted to know, “Can I have my bodily autonomy back?”
“Uteruses would like a word with you,” @HootPhD replied. “LGBTQ folk would like a word with you. Libraries and public schools would like a word with you. You raging, filthy liar.”
