Mueller's statement on his report was 'an implicit rebuke of Bill Barr': Ex-DOJ spokesman
Former Department of Justice spokesman Matthew Miller on Wednesday said special counsel Robert Mueller's statement about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election was an "implicit rebuke" of Attorney General Bill Barr.
While appearing on MSNBC, Miller outlined the ways that Mueller's statement contradicted Barr's initial four-page summary of his investigation's final report.
"I think both on the Russian collusion side of the investigation and the obstruction side, he contradicted things that the attorney general has said," Miller explained. "On obstruction... when Bill Barr held his press conference releasing the report, he was asked point blank did the special counsel not make a determination because he thought it ought to be left to Congress. Barr said, 'I hope that's not what he's doing,' it's the job of prosecutors to make the determinations."
Miller pointed out, though, that Mueller said that he was clearly constrained by Department of Justice policies against indicting sitting presidents.
"I thought Mueller made very clear in his statement that the Constitution leaves that question to Congress for a sitting president," he said.
