Answering the haters: An FAQ for trolls who have questions

Yesterday, I posted an explanation at Slate about why I'm turning my Twitter mentions feed off and starting a new life with a dramatically reduced exposure to carping haters trying to make me feel bad about myself. I've been traveling and, of course, not checking Twitter mentions, so I haven't seen much response to it. But I do know that sexists do not take it well when told they're not entitled to a woman's attention just because they want it. I also have a lot of experience of my own and watching what happens to other women when they push back against harassment. So I've compiled a list of the objections I expect the post to receive, and my responses.

Attacks on women in gaming are so obviously not about ethics, but about misogyny

For those who have been following this ridiculous "#GamerGate" story, where a bunch of misogynists who have been harassing a video game developer named Zoe Quinn because her vindictive ex-boyfriend sent them after her, have probably been happy to see that Quinn just dumped a bunch of screenshots disproving their already flimsy excuses for the harassment. From the get-go, it's been obvious that the real reason all these haters have been attacking Quinn is that she's a hate object for them to dump their misogyny and resentments all over, but the "official" reason is they are very concerned about the integrity of gaming journalism. The accusation is she "bought" positive press by sleeping with a journalist for it. The fact that the press she supposedly bought with sex doesn't exist hasn't slowed this bullshit down. But Quinn shared a bunch of screenshots showing that, in fact, the "concern" over "ethics" was a paper-thin rationale for what's really going on, which is a widespread semi-conspiracy to harass a few targeted women in games in an effort to scare off anyone in gaming who insists on believing women are people. So I recommend reading the link.

Harassment doesn't need curse words to be harassment

I'm excited to announce a new art installation, for those of you in L.A., by the fantastic Amy Roth. Titled "A Woman's Room Online", it's a depiction of how it feels to be the target of a gendered harassment campaign online, something that sadly seems to be happening more and more frequently. From Amy's description:

It really is that simple: Feminists care about women

I meant to post earlier, but the day got past me, in part because I was on CNN talking about the celebrity photo theft situation. Sadly, the video isn't online---I suspect it got drowned out by bigger news stories---but I have been mildly fascinated by the way that assorted sexists have bent themselves into pretzels to suggest that it's a woman's fault if someone else forcibly tries to steal part of her private sex life from her to expose it to the world. It's expanded well beyond the usual don't-enjoy-your-life-if-you-don't-want-random-strangers-to-humiliate-you-for-it bullshit. David Futrelle collected a strange theory that seems awfully popular amongst the misogynist crowd on Reddit.

A brief moment of honesty about cat-calling is swiftly snuffed out at the National Review

Hat tip to Roy Edroso for exposing me to the unfortunate "debate" over cat-calling that went down at the National Review. It really encapsulates the two basic conservative urges when it comes to responding to the "Republican war on women" meme: The smart, well-disciplined response vs. giving into the urge to wallow in base misogyny.

Good on California for passing an "affirmative consent" standard for sexual assault for schools

So, the California legislature passed---and I fully expect the governor to sign---a bill requiring that universities employ an "affirmative consent" standard when defining what constitutes sexual assault for the purposes of school disciplinary hearings. Reuters description:

Conservative media desperately trying to throw water on Beyoncé's feminist moment

Beyoncé did her song "***Flawless" last night as part of a bigger---20 minutes!---set at the MTV Video Music Awards, and clearly conservatives are threatened. I expect that this is going to get ugly quickly, but the initial reaction is to try to deny that she could be a feminist because, of course, she likes sex. There's no doubt that having Beyoncé out there hyping feminism is a big deal, so conservatives are desperately trying to take it away by claiming that she's not really a feminist, because they, as people who hate feminism and want to wipe it out, are the self-appointed arbiters of what feminism is. To which I kindly say, fuck off. Misogynists don't get to define feminism, not now and not ever.

Here are the acceptable ways to get revenge on a cheater (and one unacceptable way)

So I wrote earlier at Daily Beast about a horrible story of a vindictive ex-boyfriend inciting crowds of haters online to target his ex-girlfriend with a harassment campaign to punish her for allegedly cheating on him. The pathetic douchebags behind this are flailing around, grasping at straws to excuse their disgusting behavior, but the efforts to justify their behavior are so paper thin that they would be funny if there wasn't a real human being being doused in a firehose of misogynist abuse. (And, of course, the depressing female haters who all imagine they are Special Snowflakes and whose attempts at building self-esteem by bashing other women are so pathetic they often cross the line into pitiable.) Unsurprisingly, I had to turn my mentions on Twitter off again because the misogynist abuse is drowning out anyone who wants to hit me up with a productive comment, but that's par the course these days. Anyone who thinks sexism is dead needs to spend two minutes looking online to see that outrage at women for daring to be full, flawed humans instead of easily managed toys is all the rage.
