Why the Romneycare Digs Shouldn't Be a Priority

Steve Kornacki's piece at Salon today on two of Romney's biggest weaknesses lays out some of the common wisdom that's forming around Mitt Romney. One, which I think is indisputable, is that Romney's position as an unthinking member of the 1% is going to hurt him. Voters aren't just that interested in someone who has lived in a bubble of absolute luxury his whole life, the kind of guy who owns a car elevator, for fuck's sake. At least not one who backs that image up by pushing conservative policies that are aimed primarily at stripping away the social safety net on the grounds that America can't afford it. This country has people who can afford car elevators. We can afford to not let innocent people die from lack of decent health care.

Alternate Brave Soundtrack

I really loved "Brave" and am somewhat perplexed by the mixed reaction it's getting. Maybe it's because I had a femininity-policing mother who had mixed feelings about it even as she did it. Either way, the worst part of the movie was easily the soundtrack, so I created an alternate one. It's a mix of Scottish bands and songs that are on-theme. Enjoy!

Americans Driving Less, Especially Young Men

A quiet revolution that gets almost no mainstream attention is happening under our noses: Americans are getting out of their cars and biking, walking, or taking public transportation to their destinations in greater numbers. Phineas Baxandall of U.S. Public Interest Research Group crunches the numbers and finds that Americans overall are driving 6% less per capita, and that most of the shift comes from younger people not driving as much or at all. I know 6% sounds small on paper, but it adds up to billions of miles not driven a year. The largest dips come from men reducing their miles driven, because they had more to give up, as men drive more generally. Interestingly, in the youngest group, even fewer men than women have driver's licenses.

You're A Middle Of The Road Guy

Last weekend, I took a survey at my local grocery store; specifically, a survey on the quality of the store's meat and seafood section (generally: great price, mediocre quality, reasonably fresh and enough organic choices to make you feel okay about the entire endeavor).

The Junior Anti-Sex League Gets Bolder

Via Thers at Eschaton, I see that Maggie Gallagher continues the right wing trend of late of increasingly being upfront about their anti-sex beliefs instead of hiding their true agenda under euphemisms like "pro-life" or "traditional marriage".

CSA Week 3: Summertime Edition

One of the great boons to my cooking life this year has been discovering the joy of Pinterest. If you're fond of online recipes, I highly recommend it. I just roam around, reading other people's feeds and food blogs, and if I see something I like, one press and pinned! And it's all on one page---of pictures!---for me to scroll through rapidly to decide what to do with the ingredients I have. It's almost insultingly easy. So recommended.

It's so exciting for Jesse and me to transition Pandagon to Raw Story after years of doing this by ourselves. Things will basically be the same here as they were there, except that we have an exciting new community to work with.
