Russell Brand: 'It's part of the machine - Hollywood isn't liberal'
Comedian and progressive activist Russell Brand scoffed at the old trope of the "Hollywood liberal" in an interview with Young Turks host Cenk Uygur on Monday.
"It's part of the machine -- an important part of the machine, at that," Brand said. "No, Hollywood isn't liberal."
While Uygur said that conservatives will use the term "Hollywood liberal" to try to discredit Brand's stances on income inequality and media consolidation, Brand argued that the tactic doesn't matter.
"Soon, I, like all human beings, will be dead," Brand explained. "And the truth will still be the truth."
"I love when conservatives say, 'Oh, we hate Hollywood liberals, they're just actors, and by the way, our hero's Ronald Reagan,'" Uygur said in agreement.
Brand also argued that being part of the Hollywood "machine" in and of itself is not likely to make someone more of a liberal, before telling Uygur about a trip he took back to his native Essex after attaining his own success.
"I went back there and it got worse and worse and worse," he said. "And the people there think that the problem is immigration, or people that are slightly different than them. And what you know, and I know, and all of us know is that if there's a group of people who haven't got any money and power, it's because somewhere else, there's a group of people with a lot of money and power."
