WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to run for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, is set to begin a trip abroad on Saturday taking him through Japan, South Korea, Israel and the United Kingdom.
While the trip is officially billed as a trade mission, the tour is widely seen as an attempt to burnish his foreign policy credentials in the lead-up to an official announcement, expected in the late spring or early summer.
The governor had said in March that the Ukraine War is a "territorial dispute" and that it is not of strategic interest to the United States, a position he has since partially walked back. Those comments provoked criticism from Democrats and many Republicans, though it is a stance he shares with about half of the party's base as well as Republican former President Donald Trump.
In Japan, DeSantis will meet with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi in Tokyo, the governor's office said. He is then slated to travel to Seoul, where he will meet with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, before continuing to Tel Aviv and London, where he will talk with a mix of government and business leaders.
Back home in Florida, there are signs he is beginning to build out a foreign policy apparatus. His political operation is in the process of bringing on Dustin Carmack, a cybersecurity and intelligence expert with significant foreign policy experience, said one person with knowledge of the matter.
DeSantis traveled to Washington earlier this week to meet with Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives. Shortly after his visit, several representatives from Florida endorsed Trump in a blow to the governor. DeSantis is set to address an event hosted by the Heritage Foundation, a major think tank, on Friday.

A judge who was voted out of office after he denied an abortion to a 17-year-old girl because her GPA wasn't high enough is reportedly on a shortlist to become a Florida Supreme Court justice.
Judge Jared Smith ruled last year that the unnamed teen's GPA meant that she likely didn't have the capacity to make her own decision on abortion. The decision was ultimately overturned on appeal, and Smith was voted out, but Gov. Ron DeSantis chose to promote him to an even higher court in December.
Now, Smith is being considered for another promotion, according to The Guardian. The outlet reports that Smith is one of 15 total individuals being interviewed:
"Jared Smith will be interviewed alongside 14 others next month by a nominating commission that will make recommendations to DeSantis, who last week signed a six-week abortion ban into law," The Guardian reported. "The governor appointed Smith to the newly established sixth district court of appeal in December, four months after voters in Hillsborough county ousted him from the circuit court following his controversial ruling."
The news was also picked up by Above The Law, which noted that this will be the fifth state supreme court justice pick by DeSantis.
"So a reliably conservative jurist who just happens to be out of step with Floridians is exactly the kind of person DeSantis wants on that court," the report says.
WASHINGTON — As Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) prepares to make his 2024 presidential campaign announcement, he's only been able to secure one endorsement from the congressional delegation in the states. Meanwhile, Trump has four.
According to Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL), the former president personally called him to ask for his endorsement.
"I just think from an economic standpoint — my focus has always been on small businesses and trade," said Buchanan. "I worked with him on trade if you remember. And he made the difference with that, so he's a better choice."
Raw Story asked him about Jan. 6 and whether that piece of Trump's background impacts anything. Buchanan said that it's a long time until Nov. 2024.
"You know, I'd like to see all the candidates talk about what they're going to do to lead the country forward in the future, not the past," Buchanan said of the Jan. 6 attack. He refused to comment on whether he supports Trump's promise to pardon all of the Jan. 6 attackers.
Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel, also from Florida, couldn't possibly care less about the food fight between Trump and DeSantis.
"I have no advice for Republicans," she said with a chuckle.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) compared the Republican Primary to attempts to run against David Miscavige in the Church of Scientology.
"They've got a cult leader and it's Donald Trump," Raskin said. "And at best DeSantis is going to be a runner-up or an heir apparent. But they have passed their lot with Donald Trump, which has really redefined all reality for them."
Raw Story asked about the promise of pardons for the Jan. 6 attackers, which he explained is part of Trump's "appeal to a shrinking part of the American population. But they've done everything they can to build fences around the Fox News audience and that's Trump Land."
Raw Story followed up about the lies Fox has admitted to telling in the recent Dominion lawsuit.
"The whole thing is built on lies. From the election to Jan. 6 and Fox News is willing to pay three-quarters of a billion dollars to protect the lies!" Raskin said.
As for the dirty tricks that he expects for 2024, Raskin explained that after winning in 2020 by 7 million votes, the Republican numbers are only going to grow smaller.
"So, they're going to have to engage every anti-democratic, voter suppression, voter dilution trick in the book," Raskin explained. "Trump seems determined to prove he can do anything, including shoot someone on Fifth Avenue, and his cult following won't budge. So this is where we are in the 21st century."
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) was asked about the endorsement battle among Trump and DeSantis in Florida, but passed it off as nothing more than typical campaigning.
"I believe their team believes that they do" have a path to victory, said Donalds about DeSantis. He was asked if he agreed with that and explained he's looked "at state-by-state polling and, you know, in my view, I don't think so. But, I've already made my decision. I support President Trump going back to the White House. That's not a ding to Ron DeSantis or his job as governor, but it's like I said a lot of times now, I want someone who can hit the ground running on day one."
He went on to say that because Trump has "done the job," people know what to expect. Even after what happened with COVID-19, "but those three years with President Trump, you can't possibly tell me that Joe Biden's two-and-a-half years are better than that," Donalds continued, only counting three of Trump's four years in office as a success. Bill for bill, President Joe Biden passed more legislation than Trump did in his two years than Trump did in his four, Newsweek reported.
DeSantis hasn't indicated when he intends to announce, but he's indicated it will be after the Florida legislature closes for the year.
Fox Business host and former Trump economic adviser Larry Kudlow is warning Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to ease off his attacks on his state's most popular tourist attraction.
In the wake of DeSantis floating the idea of building a prison next to Disney World this week, Kudlow said that the Florida governor had taken things too far.
"Gov. DeSantis is close to making a fool of himself with his Walt Disney obsession," he said. "This has now been going on for months and months and months. And I would argue that it is unseemly... a governor should not come crashing down on, if not the biggest, then one of the biggest businesses."
Kudlow allowed that he was not a fan of Disney's "woke politics" but went on to say that sparring nonstop with Disney was simply not worth all the time and effort that DeSantis has been putting into it.

"Stop already!" Kudlow declared. "He's not running against Walt Disney for president!"
Right-wing radio host Mark Simone then chimed in to argue that DeSantis' Disney fight showed that he "has no campaign skills, he can't debate, and he can't negotiate."

The co-hosts of "The View" started their Thursday show attacking Robert Kennedy Jr., who declared he would run for president on Wednesday. The younger Kennedy hasn't held any previous elected offices before, but concluded the presidency was an excellent place to start.
The moment comes as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) appears to be preparing to announce his presidential campaign taking on former President Donald Trump. "The View" showed a clip of DeSantis ranting about "pronouns," saying he was banning them from schools in the state, highlighting "being normal" again.
"You know, a lot of his policies aren't even going over well with other Republicans," Whoopi Goldberg explained. "So his presidential hopes are, you know, kind of looking interesting. Okay? Is there a challenger in the game anywhere that anybody has seen that might resonate differently with voters?"
Sara Haines stepped in to say that DeSantis' claim of normalcy also involves a world in which Black and White Americans couldn't drink from the same water fountain.

"There was a time when women couldn't vote or have a credit card, and that was also normal," said Haines. "Gay people, transgendered people, nonbinary people were always here. They were suffering in silence. Normal has always been normal. Like the way he worded that I find —"
"Insensitive?" asked Goldberg.
"Insensitive, tone-deaf, ignorant," Haines explained. "A lot of things. I want to clarify what normal can look like if you're not careful."
Former Trump White House staffer Alyssa Farah Griffin said that Kennedy was actually encouraged to run by Steve Bannon, Roger Stone and has appeared on Fox News host Tucker Carlson's show to promote anti-vaccine conspiracies and pro-Russia propaganda.
"On the Republican side, I'm so frustrated with Republicans running so far right and out of touch with actual real breathing Republican voters that it's impossible to support them. The vast majority of this country represents the LGBTQ communities. Eight in 10 Americans believe we need more protections to make sure they're not discriminated against and 67 percent of Republicans believe that. When you do something like the 'Don't Say Gay' bill you're losing voters like me. You're also losing young voters. You're losing young voters like me. The biggest voting bloc in 2024 will be Gen Zers and Millennial voters. We are the generation of marriage equality. We are not going back on that."
The panel of women went on to cite some of the worst things that RFK Jr. has said over the past several years, including his claim that Anne Frank didn't have it as bad as anti-vaccine people in America because at least she could hide from the Nazis.

New laws imposed by right-wing state legislatures have been a driving force behind a rise in book bans since the beginning of the 2022-23 school year, a national free expression group reported Thursday.
PEN America's new report, Banned in the USA: State Laws Supercharge Book Suppression in Schools, reveals that 874 unique titles were pulled from public school library shelves from July-December 2022, the result of 1,477 individual book bans.
That represents a 28% rise from the first half of 2022, and the group said the escalation is largely due to state-level "stringent policies that schools must abide by when reviewing existing library collections."
The states that have banned the most books include Texas and Florida—where Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has pushed legislation to restrict teachers from discussing LGBTQ+ issues in classrooms and where some schools were directed to empty or cover bookshelves in order to comply with the new laws.
Just seven districts in Texas were behind 438 individual book bans and 13 school districts in Florida were responsible for 357 bans.
In previous years schools have removed books as the result of complaints by individual parents or community members, but 74% of book bans this school year have been linked to organized efforts by pro-censorship groups like Moms for Liberty, pressure from elected officials, or newly enacted state laws.
Nearly a third of the school book bans since the beginning of the school year, said PEN America, have been the direct result of laws passed in three states: Utah, Florida, and Missouri.
"The heavy-handed tactics of state legislators are mandating book bans, plain and simple," said Suzanne Nossel, CEO of PEN America. "Some politicians like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have tried to dismiss the rise in book bans as a 'hoax.' But their constituents and supporters are not fooled. The numbers don't lie, and reveal a relentless crusade to constrict children's freedom to read."
Public school districts across Missouri acted swiftly last year to pull 313 book titles from school library and classroom shelves after Senate Bill 775 was passed in August. The law was originally written to create new protections for survivors of sexual assault, but an amendment made it a Class A misdemeanor for librarians or teachers to provide students with so-called "explicit sexual material."
"The unfortunate reality of Senate Bill 775 is that, now in effect, it includes criminal penalties for individual educators," said one school administrator after the law was passed. "We are not willing to risk those potential consequences and will err on the side of caution on behalf of the individuals who serve our students."
Tennessee Republicans have passed a law requiring school libraries to catalogue books based on age-appropriateness, resulting in "wholesale bans" of books, the Thursday report says, as teachers and administrators "decided to remove classroom library collections rather than put themselves at risk of punishment."
Such wholesale bans are an "emerging feature" of the quickly escalating trend, said PEN America.
"We had one librarian who began pulling absolutely everything because the fear became so overwhelming," one library official in Missouri toldCoda. "Others wound up shutting down their library for periods of time just so they could ensure they had gone through everything."
The group's report follows another analysis by the American Library Association, which revealed in March that across public libraries in the U.S., an unprecedented 2,571 unique titles were challenged in 2022, a 38% increase from the previous year.
Also driven by pro-censorship groups and politicians, libraries recorded 1,269 demands to censor books last year, compared to 729 demands in 2021.
In the second half of 2022, 30% of the titles banned in school libraries were about race, racism, or characters of color, while 26% of the books had LGBTQ+ themes or characters.
Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe and Flamer by Mike Curato—both including LGBTQ+ themes—are the most banned titles so far this year, having been prohibited in 15 school districts. Tricks by Ellen Hopkins and The Handmaid's Tale: the Graphic Novel by Margaret Atwood and Renee Nault were banned in 13 and 12 districts, respectively.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) once again is under fire, this time for recording a video complaining that “they” haven’t solved a temporary gasoline shortage affecting South Florida. But his complaining is also creating a headache for Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who has been MIA for weeks from the Sunshine State as he promotes his book – and unannounced presidential candidacy.
“FOUR DAYS and they still can’t figure out how to get enough gasoline to South Florida,” Sen. Rubio tweeted late Wednesday night.
“What’s happening right now in Miami and to Fort Lauderdale with gasoline is crazy,” he said in his video (below).
“You can’t find gasoline anywhere,” Rubio continued, which is at best misleading. Some gas stations reportedly have closed due in part to panic buying in the wake of a massive storm that hit South Florida a week ago, dropping more than two feet of water on cities like Fort Lauderdale in just seven hours.
Patrick De Haan, head of Gasbuddy’s petroleum analysis, told CBS News there are “millions of gallons of gasoline still waiting to be delivered.” CBS says he “estimated it would take about a week for things to get back to normal.”
But De Haan also responded to the Florida senator’s complaining video, all but indicting Governor DeSantis: “glad there’s no denial here that there’s a *lot* of stations without gasoline in SE FL,” he wrote, retweeting Rubio. “yes, pumps should have been put back in order by now and facilities brought back. but unfortunately that hasn’t happened yet.”
He added, “we have data and insights, but no one in Florida has asked for it.”
That would appear to include Florida’s GOP governor and two GOP senators.
Rubio continued his complaining.
“This has been going on since Sunday. And they’re blaming it on the floods that impacted the ports, and I know that was a factor but it’s been four days,” he repeated. “This should have been figured out by now.”
He noted consumer panic as another reason for the problem. Noting long lines to the pumps, he said, “of course people are panic buying, because you don’t know the next time you’re going to have to make a two-hour line.”
“They keep saying it’s going to get better but it’s not,” Rubio said, again complaining. “They got to get this thing fixed. This is crazy.”
If the Senator thought his “everyman” approach would win him fans, he appears to have miscalculated.
“Sir, the ‘they’ here is you. You work in the government,” responded U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
“Maybe he could call his United States senator?” mocked Vanity Fair’s Molly Jong-Fast.
“Who is ‘they’ Marco? Aren’t you part of ‘they?’ If a U.S. senator can’t get things moving, what use are you? You’re of no use. You’re useless,” said writer Carter Gaddis. He continued: “I mean, really. You might be the most useless senator in Florida history.”
“There’s always a ‘they’ responsible for your problems. You’re a *senator*. You’re literally the guy people send to DC to fix this stuff,” tweeted writer and political analyst Brett Pransky. “Do some work already and get your people what they need. Buck stops with you, Sparky.”
Social media users also went after Governor DeSantis, who in addition to ignoring the gas shortage, initially ignored the massive flooding in Fort Lauderdale that helped cause it. DeSantis stuck to his book tour while flying into the Sunshine State just along enough to quietly sign a six-week abortion ban, before heading out of state just hours later.
“Have you tried calling the governor’s office,” asked Huffpost White House correspondent S.V. Dáte. “Actually, they might be in South Carolina today.”
“Marco Rubio using pronouns like a boss to avoid calling out Ron DeSantis,” observed Democratic strategist Max Burns.
Florida Politics publisher Peter Schorsch scorched DeSantis: “Perhaps @GovRonDeSantis should be heading to South Florida this weekend rather than South Korea.”
Media Matters’ Craig Harrington mocked Rubio – and DeSantis: “Who is the ‘they’ here that Lil’ Marco is complaining about? Who is in charge of the State of Florida? Who is the no-show leader who can’t be bothered to tackle these challenges?”
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may be losing his grip over the Republican legislature at the end a session that has been spent pushing through his agenda.
GOP legislators have spent hours and hours debating and passing bills seemingly aimed at supporting his presidential ambitions, but his announcement that he wanted them to revive a war on Disney has privately frustrated many of his Republican allies, reported Politico.
“We’re not the party of cancel culture," said one GOP legislator. "We can’t keep doing this tit for tat.”
The whispers are growing louder in the statehouse, and Republicans are stalling some of his remaining legislative priorities as this year's session winds down, but so far none of them are willing to speak out publicly -- but at least one House Republican has told a former colleague that he was prepared to resign in frustration.

“People are deeply frustrated,” said former state Sen. Jeff Brandes, a St. Petersburg Republican who's been in contact with his former colleagues during the session. “They are not spending any time on the right problems ... Most legislators believe that the balance of power has shifted too far and the Legislature needs to re-establish itself as a coequal branch of government.”
Many GOP legislators told Politico they still support DeSantis' priorities but complained their own bills have been set aside by legislative leaders working with the governor's office, and some of them said the Republican supermajority made it easier for leaders to ignore their complaints.
“I think our Republican colleagues are done,” said state Sen. Jason Pizzo, a South Florida Democrat. “I think they are fed up. There’s obviously still some true believers and there’s some very loyal and allegiant individuals and groups … They would like him to hurry up and announce and start focusing exclusively on other stuff other than here.”
Donald Trump is trying to muscle Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis out of the 2024 presidential race before he officially enters by gobbling up endorsements from many of the state's Republican lawmakers.
The former president and his allies have been working the phones to land the backing of Florida's GOP delegation, capitalizing on the governor's infamous aloofness, and Trump announced an event Thursday night at his Mar-a-Lago resort to shine a spotlight on those endorsements.
"A great group of supportive Florida Congressmen and Congresswomen, all who have Endorsed me, will be coming to Mar-a-Lago tonight," Trump posted on his Truth Social website. "Our support is almost universal in Florida and throughout the USA. They remember fondly all of the incredible things I did while in office, one of the most successful Administrations in History. Will be a great night!"
Trump had reportedly planned to dribble out the announcements one by one in hopes of spooking the governor, who has frustrated his state's GOP legislators with his attacks on Disney, but the ex-president apparently decided to make a splash with the Mar-a-Lago event.

Donald Trump assailed his presumed top Republican rival Wednesday in a new video in which he suggested his frenemy may not even join the race.
The former president blasted Ron DeSantis over the Florida governor’s past support for privatizing Social Security and Medicare, entitlements that Trump has pledged not to cut should he be elected.
DeSantis in 2012 said he supported such plans, CNN reports.
“We're getting lots of job requests from people currently working for the Social Security, Medicare-cutting 'DeSanctimonious' campaign,” Trump says in the video.
“Ron’s poll numbers are dropping so fast and furious that many people are speculating he’s not going to run.”
Trump also took aim at strategist Jeff Roe, who is leading a pro-DeSantis PAC.
“He just hired 'kiss of death' Jeff Roe. He’s the kiss of death,” Trump said. “I can tell you a lot of the people that we defeated who were represented by Jeff Roe.”
Trump bragged about his poll numbers before taking parting shots at DeSantis and President Joe Biden.
“He’s going to help Ron, but I don’t think he’s going to help him much because I'm leading in Texas by 42 points and Iowa and New Hampshire by a lot overall by close to 40 (points) and by 10 against the scammer Joe Biden.”

(Reuters) - DonaldTrump continued to rack up endorsements in Florida for his presidential campaign on Wednesday, outmaneuvering the state's Governor Ron DeSantis on his home turf.
Vern Buchanan, co-chair of the state's congressional delegation became the eighth Florida lawmaker to come out in support of the former president, announcing his endorsement on Wednesday, hours after a personal call from Trump.
"If we want to get our economy back on track, Donald Trump is just the guy to get it done," Buchanan said.
Trump launched a bid for the 2024 Republican nomination in November, and polls show he is leading the field of declared and as-yet undeclared candidates. DeSantis is expected to launch a run and is in second position in polls.
The string of Trump endorsements, including four in Florida and five in two other states this week, have come as DeSantis faces a barrage of insults on social media and attack ads from Trump's camp.
"When your calling card is Florida and folks in your own backyard defect that is never a good sign," said Ford O'Connell, a Republican consultant who was a Trump campaign surrogate in 2020. "They have the DeSantis campaign in a vulnerable position."
DeSantis' team had asked members of Florida's congressional delegation to hold off announcing any endorsements, according to a person familiar with the effort. Only one, Laurel Lee, stuck with DeSantis, announcing her endorsement on Tuesday.
Trump contacted the lawmakers personally, inviting them to a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Thursday night.
A DeSantis aide declined to comment.
A source familiar with DeSantis’ thinking said the wave of endorsements had not persuaded the governor to accelerate his timetable for a presidential announcement. DeSantis is expected to make clear his intentions after the Florida legislature wraps up its session in early May, followed by a more formal campaign launch in June.
DeSantis, the source said, is currently limited by law as to what he can do as a non-candidate and can’t explicitly ask for endorsements. "We haven’t gotten started yet," the person said.

Transgender and nonbinary children were temporarily detained by Capitol Police following a raucous protest of pending anti-trans legislation at the Florida House of Representatives on Tuesday.
Video posted on TikTok shows a group of adults facing officers at a security checkpoint in the building while chanting “Let the parents in!” It appears they were demanding to get to their children who they claimed were being detained inside.
“You are legally required to have the parents involved in this process,” one woman can be heard telling an officer. “So, let them in. You are legally required. They are minors. Let them go.” As the woman is speaking, the video shows a man who appears to be wearing the badge of the Florida House of Representatives Office of the Sergeant at Arms closing a door.
Another TikTok video shows two men wearing suits standing in front of a door marked “House of Representatives” as adults chant, “Let them go.”
“The parents are here,” an individual narrates in the video. “They are withholding them from the parents illegally.” Another person can be heard yelling: “Kidnappers! Kidnappers!”
Andres Malave, a spokesperson for the Florida House Majority Office, confirmed to Raw Story that young protesters were temporarily detained in the gallery and that one person was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace of a lawful assembly. Malave said protesters who were detained were also issued trespass orders banning them from the Capitol grounds for one year.
The officers detained the protesters after they allegedly rained down underwear from the balcony gallery on lawmakers seated below. The garments were scrawled with messages like “Fascism has no place in Florida. Stop trans genocide.”
The protest took place as lawmakers were debating several anti-trans bills, including measures preventing transgender people from using the bathroom that accords with their gender identity, imposing penalties on businesses that expose children to “adult live performance,” and banning gender-affirming care. The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida describes the latter measure as “threatening medical providers with criminal sentences for helping transgender youth access life-saving healthcare.”
The three bills passed the Florida House on Wednesday and are headed to Gov. Ron DeSantis' desk for his signature.
Malave told Raw Story he didn’t know how long the children were detained in the gallery.
“Until the officers conducted their investigation, they did what they had to do,” Malave said.
Malave said that, based on his observations, parents or guardians were allowed to their children, contradicting the accounts of some of the adults shown in the TikTok videos who claimed they were shut out.
“Supposed parents and guardians were given an opportunity to identify their kids and be there,” Malave said. “I saw at least one guardian who was escorted in when she was identified as a parent.”
Malave disputed the description of the officers as “kidnappers.”
“I’m not even going to entertain that question,” he told Raw Story. “You’re accusing the Florida House of Representatives of kidnapping? You’re reading some random tweets that are hyper-charged from a protest. A series of individuals disrupted the business of the House of Representatives. Actions have consequences. Nobody singled them out. As such, they were detained accordingly.”
