Five GOP presidential candidates were at the Iowa State Fair Friday, mixing campaign speeches and talking with Iowans with traditional fair activities like grilling pork chops and taking a peek at the Butter Cow.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, former Vice President Mike Pence and California talk show host Larry Elder were all return visitors to the Des Moines Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Pence told the crowd at the Des Moines Register Political Soapbox Thursday that he and his wife, Karen Pence, had plans to visit the livestock barns, while Burgum told Gov. Kim Reynolds at a morning “fair-side chat” that he wanted to try a “rattlesnake on a stick.”

Within days of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ suspension of Monique Worrell, an executive staff member at the State Attorney’s Office who was on maternity leave was notified of her termination when investigators with the office accompanied by law enforcement made an unexpected visit to her home. Keisha Mulfort, the former chief of staff for the State Attorney’s Office and Worrell, went on leave on May 30, the day her daughter was born. DeSantis’ megadonors watch and wait as campaign struggles

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — GOP megadonors who invested in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as an alternative to Donald Trump for president are having serious second thoughts about continuing to back a candidate who political analysts say is looking like a bad bet. Among them are: A Las Vegas aerospace business and hotel owner who has spent part of his fortune looking for proof of extraterrestrials. An NFL team owner and mall developer whose bribery conviction was pardoned by Trump. An investment broker whose firm suffered fallout from the Silicon Valley Bank failure. Those donors and others, including hedge...

DeSantis-appointed state attorney cancels diversion programs, nixes policy following Worrell’s ouster

In his first morning as state attorney, Andrew Bain made immediate and sweeping changes: He fired two executive staff members, canceled the office’s catch-and-release policy and discontinued the office’s diversion programs while he “evaluate[s] their effectiveness.” The actions by Bain, a member of the conservative Federalist Society who Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed to the Orange County judicial bench in 2020, represent a sharp departure from Monique Worrell, the elected state attorney for Orange and Osceola Counties who DeSantis ousted from office Wednesday. Bain’s actions also caused concern ...

'Make up your own reality': Former Republican staffer reveals how party concocts bogus stories

Former RNC staffer Justin Higgins this week claimed to progressive podcaster Aaron Rupar that the GOP uses right-wing media to simply create bogus stories out of absolutely nothing.

While discussing the spin being placed by Fox News pundits on special counsel Jack Smith's indictment of former President Donald Trump, Rupar argued that Fox is claiming that Smith is prosecuting Trump solely for exercising his First Amendment rights under the United States Constitution – despite the fact that Smith specifically says in his indictment that this is not the case.

'Very scary': Former RNC staffer dishes on the more terrifying members of GOP's right-wing

Many of the most far-right House Republicans truly believe the propaganda and extremism that they promote – in stark contrast to others for whom it's just an act to get votes, a former RNC researcher said Thursday.

In an interview on the Aaron Rupar Show, Justin Higgans argued the true far-right believers — who have lately been causing fractures and divisions among GOP power caucuses — often end up tanking their own careers with their own inability to compromise.

'Attack on democracy': Prosecutor suspended by Ron DeSantis speaks out

Ousted Orlando prosecutor Monique Worrell hit back at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on MSNBC Wednesday, calling his move to throw her out of office an "attack on democracy."

DeSantis unilaterally suspended Worrell, an independently elected Democratic prosecutor and the state's only Black woman state attorney, claiming that he was entitled to do so because she was taking insufficient action to fight crime in her area — even though homicides have declined in her district over the last year for which there is data. The move sparked outrage, and came shortly after he dismissed another state attorney for refusing to enforce abortion laws, which was found illegal by a federal judge.
