The article was titled "WATCH: VA Senate Candidate Corey Stewart Calls Anti-Semite Paul Nehlen 'Hero'"
The video, which the article describes as "recently surfaced," was posted by the candidate himself, on February 4, 2017 while Stewart was running for governor of Virginia.
"One of my personal heroes, not from Virginia, but from the great state of Wisconsin, there is Paul Nehlen (R-WI), who had a lot of courage and took on Speaker [Paul] Ryan (R-WI)," Stewart says in the video. "And I can't tell you how much I was inspired by you."
Nehlen advocated murdering Speaker Ryan with a fascist "death flight" prior to being banned from Twitter.
"Now we need you to win Virginia," Nehlen, also wearing a tuxedo, says to Stewart in the video.
"We're all going to keep the leadership in Congress accountable to President Trump's agenda, that's what we're here for," Nehlen continued.
"Yep," Stewart replied. "That's right."
The article, by Kassy Dillon, may offer a clue to the motivation of the broadside, which goes back to Stewart's controversial claims on Twitter.
"Nehlen also attempted to blame his loss of support on Jews. He compiled a list of 81 verified users who have 'attacked' him for his "#AmericaFirst positions," Dillon noted. "The list displays the names, Twitter handles, and the religious affiliation Nehlen suspects of each individual. Several of the 'Jews' on the list are, in fact, not Jewish, including myself."
Nehlen has lately been shunned by far-right leaders, having been disavowed by Steve Bannon and Breitbart.
Will Stewart suffer a similar fate?
The same bigotry that made Nehlan toxic may do the same for Stewart.
Jason Kessler, who organized the deadly "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, tweeted a photo of Stewart posing with a Confederate Flag.
Also running in the June 12th GOP primary are state Del. Nick Freitas, who has the support of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and Bishop E.W. Jackson, a Christian minister who lost the 2013 campaign for Lt. Governor in Virginia.
