US Senate backs repeal of 'zombie' Iraq war authorizations, 20 years after invasion

By Patricia Zengerle

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Senate easily passed legislation on Wednesday to repeal two decades-old authorizations for past wars in Iraq, as Congress pushes to reassert its role in deciding whether to send troops into combat 20 years after the last invasion.

Trump makes it embarrassingly clear he doesn't know the difference between NATO and NAFTA

Former President Donald Trump recently conducted a television interview where he appeared to not know the difference between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

During a recent appearance on Fox News, Trump spoke with conservative host Sean Hannity where he claimed he "got rid of NATO."

'He’s hardly infirm': Judge shoots down Fox News lawyers’ efforts to avoid Rupert Murdoch’s testimony

At 92, Rupert Murdoch is far from retired. Much of the coverage at Fox News and Fox Business reportedly reflects his enthusiasm for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as a possible 2024 GOP presidential candidate. And the Melbourne, Australia native (who has homes in London as well as different parts of the United States) continues to be a highly influential figure in right-wing media.

During a late March pre-trial hearing in Delaware, Judge Eric M. Davis pushed back against what he said were efforts by Fox News attorneys to prevent him from traveling to testify in Dominion Voting Systems' $1.6 billion defamation case against the right-wing cable news outlet. Davis, according to National Public Radio (NPR), believes that Murdoch is still perfectly capable of traveling.

Leak reveals Fox News CEO raged at host for fact checking Trump: 'This has to stop'

Matt Gertz, a senior fellow at left-wing media watchdog Media Matters for America, has posted some photographs on Twitter of a leaked slideshow deck that Dominion Voting Systems is using in its defamation lawsuit against Fox News.

Among other things, the deck features an email from Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott in which she berated host Eric Shawn for fact checking former President Donald Trump's false claims about Democrats using "massive dumps of votes" to cheat in the 2020 presidential election.

Senate passes repeal of Iraq war authorizations

The United State Congress enacted the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force which empowered then-president George W. Bush to send US forces to Iraq in 2003

Washington (AFP) - US senators advanced cross-party legislation on Wednesday to repeal authorizations for the wars in Iraq -- 20 years after American forces invaded the country to remove Saddam Hussein from power.

Both parties supported canceling the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) that empowered George W Bush to launch the invasion, as well as the 1991 version that allowed his father, George HW Bush, to attack Iraq after Saddam's forces invaded Kuwait.

How 5 Republicans are responding to the mass shooting of 3 children and 3 adults in Nashville

There are 535 seats in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and another six non-voting seats for delegates. After Monday's horrific mass shooting at a private Christian elementary school, where three nine-year olds and three adults were shot to death, very few Members appeared on-camera to talk with reporters about the tragedy.

The Democrats who did advocated for various gun control measures, including reinstating the federal assault weapons ban signed into law in 1994 by President Bill Clinton that Republican lawmakers and President George W. Bush refused to renew in 2004, after which mass shootings and gun violence skyrocketed.

'This scam is a non-starter': Dems blast McCarthy's latest plan for painful cuts

Congressional Democrats reiterated their opposition to steep federal spending cuts on Tuesday after Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy issued a vague outline of his caucus' demands, which include more punitive work requirements for aid recipients and steep cuts to non-military spending.

The GOP leader laid out the broad demands in a Tuesday letter to President Joe Biden as progress toward an agreement to raise the debt ceiling and prevent a default remains nonexistent.

McCarthy (R-Calif.) called for another meeting with the president to discuss the debt ceiling standoff, which is a result of the House GOP majority's insistence on painful budget cuts as a necessary condition for any borrowing limit increase. The Congressional Budget Office has projected that the U.S. will default on its debt this summer unless Congress acts.

Trump busted by CNN fact checker for telling a 'story that cannot possibly be true'

Former President Donald Trump has been ramping up his attacks on potential presidential rival Ron DeSantis, but CNN fact checker Daniel Dale has found a number of egregious whoppers in his attacks on the Florida governor.

One of the most egregious instances, writes Dale, comes from Trump telling a "story that cannot possibly be true" when discussing his decision to endorse DeSantis in 2018.

Nashville school shooter hid seven firearms in house

The 28-year-old who shot dead six people at an elementary school in Nashville was able to buy and conceal multiple weapons in the family home despite evidence of mental health issues, police said Tuesday.

Two nine-year-old girls, a nine-year-old boy, two teachers and a school custodian died in the Monday attack, which recharged the bitter debate over gun rights in the United States.

Is this the real reason Trump keeps making vapid jokes about parents hating their kids?

Former President Donald Trump has developed a favorite new joke on the campaign trail: that his followers hate their kids. And while it's largely tongue-in-cheek, it's coming from a real place, and an understanding Trump has about the tension in his supporters' families, wrote Philip Bump for The Washington Post on Tuesday.

One of the most recent instances of Trump dropping this joke was during a video in which he was touting his 2017 tax bill's provision doubling the exemption for the estate tax.

GOP congressman confronted live on CNN over his gun-toting ‘come and take it’ video

Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) was cornered on CNN's "The Lead" Tuesday by anchor Phil Mattingly with a "come and take it" video he posted in 2020, of a weapon similar to that used in the rampage at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee this week that left six people dead.

"You know, the president has once again reiterated his call for a reinstatement of the assault weapons ban," said Mattingly. "You know, back in 2020 you went viral. You posted this video after a similar plea. Take a watch."

Far-right Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate described as 'unfit to serve' in a scathing op-ed

In Wisconsin on Tuesday, April 4, voters will elect either a far-right MAGA Republican or a liberal to a seat on the state's supreme court. Republican Dan Kelly is up against liberal Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Janet Protasiewicz, who has been railing against Kelly relentlessly over his severe anti-abortion views as well as for his sympathy for election denialists.

Kelly has given Protasiewicz plenty of material to work with. On March 21, he spoke at an event headlined by the Rev. Matthew Trewhella — a Christian fundamentalist who has described killing abortion providers as "justifiable homicide." Trewhella, a supporter of the militia movement, has also called for evangelicals to receive paramilitary training and wage a holy war against adversaries.
