A dozen presidential hopefuls now have dark-money groups who can build campaigns for 2024: report

On Monday, POLITICO reported that at least a dozen people considering a presidential campaign in 2024 already have affiliated dark-money groups who can raise money and build campaigns on their behalf — and that for now, they can completely shield their donors from any public disclosure.

"At least a dozen potential candidates for president in 2024 have active nonprofit groups aligned with them, according to a review of corporate filings, campaign disclosures and financial records obtained by POLITICO," reported Scott Bland. "What they all have in common is the ability to pay staffers, fund polling and policy research, run ads and accept money from megadonors without divulging those funders’ names — or much information about any spending until many months after the fact. It’s the latest escalation in a fundraising arms race that has seen personal benefactors, super PACs and now secret money become common building blocks of presidential campaigns."

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Count Nikki Haley as a Sarah Palin supporter. Anti-Trump Republicans engaging in a 'shadow primary' in case he falters: report

While high-profile Republicans like former Vice President Mike Pence and ex-U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley are ostensibly sitting on the sidelines waiting to see if Donald Trump announces his third bid to run for president again, some of the former president's Republican critics are making moves to line up support for a bid themselves if he decides to sit 2024 out.

According to a report from the Associated Press, a trio of anti-Trumpers are testing the waters by traveling and seeing if there is enough support to jump into the race with an appeal to conservatives who have grown tired of the twice-impeached former president's act.

GOP insider 'shocked' as Trump’s endorsement of Tennessee candidate sparks a huge backlash

When Morgan Ortagus announced her bid for a House seat in Tennessee last month, she did so with former President Donald Trump’s “complete and total endorsement." That used to be a surefire way for a GOP candidate instantly to become competitive in a crowded field.

As NBC News reports, the thumbs up from Trump may not have much clout in Tennessee. Some in the GOP aren't fond of Trump’s endorsement, which they view essentially as an anointment. State Sen. Frank Niceley, who has led the legislative effort to institute a three-year minimum residency requirement for political candidates, said, "I voted for Trump. I supported him. I’ll vote for Trump as long as he lives. But I don’t want him coming out here to tell me who to vote for.”

The stunning hypocrisy of Nikki Haley is on full display: conservative columnist

A conservative publication on Thursday portrayed Nikki Haley as a hypocritical opportunist because of her recent statements about Russia and Ukraine.

On Jan. 26, Donald Trump's former United Nations ambassador told Fox News host Brian Kilmeade this about Putin's Ukraine intentions: “Putin knows it’s costly, and he knows he can’t do it. This is him leveraging to see what he can get. He doesn’t want to expand,” she went on, adding, “I don’t think Russia wants to go to war.” On Feb. 8, she told Fox News anchor Bret Baier that Putin’s real plan was to cut a deal: “What Russia’s really trying to do is get us to not allow Ukraine into NATO.”

Truck convoy drivers wonder where the donated money went -- and what the mission is

An undertone of doubt and suspicion appears to growing louder among some of the truckers taking part in the "People's Convoy" in the Washington, D.C. area. As the Daily Beast notes, many in the gathering have begun questioning where and how the $1.6 million raised online to support the effort is being spent.

Since last weekend the group has massed in the parking lot of a racetrack in Hagerstown, Md, which is about 80 miles northeast of the District of Columbia. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday the mix of big rigs, pickup trucks and sedans has driven a couple of laps in midday around the 64-mile circular highway to protest the non-existent federal government COVID-19 mandate. They stayed put at the racetrack on Wednesday because it rained.

Conservative scorches 'broken man' Bill Barr: 'This is your brain on partisanship'

William Barr has joined the growing list of Republicans who concede Donald Trump's profound character flaws, but very few of them will go so far as admitting they wouldn't vote for him again.

The former attorney general has published a memoir describing a president who "went off the rails" after losing the 2020 election, and he agreed Trump was responsible for the Jan. 6 insurrection -- but Barr still finds it "inconceivable" to vote against that kind of man, wrote conservative columnist Amanda Carpenter for The Bulwark.
