Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been described as a competent Donald Trump, but he's probably got more in common with Hungary's right-wing authoritarian ruler, according to one political analyst.

The Republican governor has gained a reputation as an aggressive culture warrior as he readies a likely presidential run -- possibly as soon as 2024 -- but his policy agenda strongly resembles what Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán has done to his country, argued Vox senior correspondent Zack Beauchamp.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump both spent Wednesday evening vying for attention from Nevada Republicans.

The notion that Disney and the nation's schools are "grooming" children about their sexuality is directly traceable back to right-wing activists who gin up conspiracy theories on the "intellectual dark web" and is not the result of an organic shift in the opinions of American people about the LGTBQ community.

That same cadre of people, who also claim that Critical Race Theory (CRT) is being taught in grade school classrooms, are what The Daily Beast’s senior opinion editor Anthony Fisher calls “self-identified disaffected liberals” who rallied around the idea of hyper-political correctness in 2016 or 2017. Fisher notes in the latest installment of the "Fever Dreams" podcast that the biggest players in that universe are Joe Rogan, the controversial Canadian professor Jordan Peterson, YouTuber Dave Rubin, Eric Weinstein and Ben Shapiro.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) lashed out at Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and GOP Whip Steve Scalise on Tuesday after audio revealed GOP leadership were worried about the Florida man inciting violence against other lawmakers.

"In the phone call with other Republican leaders on Jan. 10, Mr. McCarthy referred chiefly to two representatives, Matt Gaetz of Florida and Mo Brooks of Alabama, as endangering the security of other lawmakers and the Capitol complex. But he and his allies discussed several other representatives who made comments they saw as offensive or dangerous, including Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Barry Moore of Alabama," Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin reported for The New York Times. "Mr. Brooks and Mr. Gaetz were the prime offenders in the eyes of G.O.P. leaders."

The House Select Committee Investigating the Jan. 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol will give House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy a further opportunity to voluntarily cooperate.

It was more than a year after the attack that the committee asked for McCarthy's cooperation. In the 104 days since the request, there have been a series of bombshell reports showing how McCarthy reacted in the wake of the attack, but the select committee does not plan to take immediate action in response.

On Tuesday, writing for Bloomberg Tax, attorney Jacob Schumer walked through how the plan by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to strip the Walt Disney corporation of its special tax status could run into a brick wall.

The plan, passed as part of a special session bill in which legislators also approved DeSantis' plan to cut the number of Black congressional districts, would eliminate the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the special taxing district Disney uses to essentially run its own mini-government on the land used by the Walt Disney World resort complex near Orlando — a measure Florida Republicans openly admit is retaliation for Disney criticizing their so-called "Don't Say Gay" school legislation.

On Tuesday, The New York Times reported that a judge has ordered the man who vandalized a LGBTQ pride mural in South Florida to write an essay on the 2016 Pulse Nightclub Massacre ahead of his sentence.

"Judge Scott Suskauer of the 15th Judicial Circuit of Florida last week ordered Alexander Jerich, 20, to write an essay about the shooting at the Pulse gay nightclub, where a gunman killed 49 people in Orlando in 2016," reported Johnny Diaz. "The essay is due by Mr. Jerich’s final sentencing date, which is set for early June and coincides with Pride month. Mr. Jerich’s lawyer, Robert Pasch, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. In a sentencing recommendation, he wrote that his client 'acknowledges and regrets the pain and anger felt by members and allies of the L.G.B.T.Q. community and citizens of Delray Beach,' the city where the mural is located."

For the second year in a row, Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed legislation clamping down on alleged election-fraud by making it harder for voter registration groups to operate and imposing stiff penalties for “ballot harvesting.”

This year’s version (SB 524) builds on legislation (SB 90) that DeSantis pushed through the Legislature in 2021.
