Ron DeSantis speeding up 'GOP’s authoritarian lurch' with moves copied from Hungary's Orbán: analyst

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been described as a competent Donald Trump, but he's probably got more in common with Hungary's right-wing authoritarian ruler, according to one political analyst.

The Republican governor has gained a reputation as an aggressive culture warrior as he readies a likely presidential run -- possibly as soon as 2024 -- but his policy agenda strongly resembles what Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán has done to his country, argued Vox senior correspondent Zack Beauchamp.

Voters seek injunction over changes made to North Florida congressional districts

Focusing on a North Florida district that has become a legal and political battleground, voting-rights groups and other plaintiffs are seeking a temporary injunction to block a congressional redistricting plan pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Attorneys for the plaintiffs filed a motion late Tuesday requesting a temporary injunction, after filing a lawsuit Friday to challenge the plan. Republican lawmakers passed the plan during a special legislative session last week. The motion, filed in Leon County circuit court, contends that an overhaul of North Florida’s Congressional District 5 violates a 20...

How the 'anti-Left' dark web is fueling 'groomer' panic

The notion that Disney and the nation's schools are "grooming" children about their sexuality is directly traceable back to right-wing activists who gin up conspiracy theories on the "intellectual dark web" and is not the result of an organic shift in the opinions of American people about the LGTBQ community.

That same cadre of people, who also claim that Critical Race Theory (CRT) is being taught in grade school classrooms, are what The Daily Beast’s senior opinion editor Anthony Fisher calls “self-identified disaffected liberals” who rallied around the idea of hyper-political correctness in 2016 or 2017. Fisher notes in the latest installment of the "Fever Dreams" podcast that the biggest players in that universe are Joe Rogan, the controversial Canadian professor Jordan Peterson, YouTuber Dave Rubin, Eric Weinstein and Ben Shapiro.

Matt Gaetz lashes out at ‘sniveling’ Kevin McCarthy over latest leaked audio: 'This is the behavior of weak men!'

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) lashed out at Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and GOP Whip Steve Scalise on Tuesday after audio revealed GOP leadership were worried about the Florida man inciting violence against other lawmakers.

"In the phone call with other Republican leaders on Jan. 10, Mr. McCarthy referred chiefly to two representatives, Matt Gaetz of Florida and Mo Brooks of Alabama, as endangering the security of other lawmakers and the Capitol complex. But he and his allies discussed several other representatives who made comments they saw as offensive or dangerous, including Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Barry Moore of Alabama," Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin reported for The New York Times. "Mr. Brooks and Mr. Gaetz were the prime offenders in the eyes of G.O.P. leaders."

Kevin McCarthy will be given another ‘invitation’ to cooperate before Jan. 6 committee considers action: report

The House Select Committee Investigating the Jan. 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol will give House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy a further opportunity to voluntarily cooperate.

Ron DeSantis' war against Disney is about to hit a major snag: legal expert

On Tuesday, writing for Bloomberg Tax, attorney Jacob Schumer walked through how the plan by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to strip the Walt Disney corporation of its special tax status could run into a brick wall.

The plan, passed as part of a special session bill in which legislators also approved DeSantis' plan to cut the number of Black congressional districts, would eliminate the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the special taxing district Disney uses to essentially run its own mini-government on the land used by the Walt Disney World resort complex near Orlando — a measure Florida Republicans openly admit is retaliation for Disney criticizing their so-called "Don't Say Gay" school legislation.

Florida man who vandalized LGBTQ mural ordered to write essay on Pulse Nightclub massacre

On Tuesday, The New York Times reported that a judge has ordered the man who vandalized a LGBTQ pride mural in South Florida to write an essay on the 2016 Pulse Nightclub Massacre ahead of his sentence.

"Judge Scott Suskauer of the 15th Judicial Circuit of Florida last week ordered Alexander Jerich, 20, to write an essay about the shooting at the Pulse gay nightclub, where a gunman killed 49 people in Orlando in 2016," reported Johnny Diaz. "The essay is due by Mr. Jerich’s final sentencing date, which is set for early June and coincides with Pride month. Mr. Jerich’s lawyer, Robert Pasch, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. In a sentencing recommendation, he wrote that his client 'acknowledges and regrets the pain and anger felt by members and allies of the L.G.B.T.Q. community and citizens of Delray Beach,' the city where the mural is located."

Twitter erupts after Boebert tells people to build 'your own Florida' if they don't like 'Don't Say Gay' law

Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert represents a Congressional district in Colorado, one of the most LBGTQ-friendly states in the country. That does not, however, prevent the gun-toting, freshman congresswoman from attacking the community.

As pointed out by the website lgbtqnation.com, Boebert is so on board with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' so-called "Don't Say Gay Law" that she is encouraging LGBTQ people to create their "own Florida" where they can be themselves.

Florida lawmaker says gerrymandered state maps are part of a racist strategy

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed into law a gerrymandered voting map that virtually guarantees Republicans four more seats in Congress while likely cutting the number of Black Democrats elected. The measure passed along party lines Thursday but was delayed when Black Florida lawmakers staged an impromptu sit-in protest. “Republicans cannot continue to disenfranchise Black voters,” says state Senator Shevrin Jones, a Democratic member of Florida’s Legislative Black Caucus who took part in the protest and who calls the gerrymandering part of a larger suite of “racist tactics” enacted by Republicans across the country.

'We love Trump, but he's not God': Trump fans unmoved by his endorsement of J.D. Vance

Saturday saw Ohio’s first taste of summer, and thousands poured into the Delaware County fairgrounds, still spongy from spring rain. The throng crowded against metal barriers hours before former president Donald Trump arrived, their faces steadily reddening under the beating sun.

The jumbotron screens played campaign ads, a promo for Donald Trump’s coffee table book and the trailer for a voter fraud conspiracy documentary in between a soundtrack of classic rock hits — Whitesnake, AC/DC, Hagar-era Van Halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Overhead a plane circled lazily, towing a banner that read, “Joe Blystone For Ohio Governor”
