The evolution of the GOP's COVID vaccine opposition

Since the onset of the pandemic, Republicans have viewed the coronavirus through a relatively different lens than the rest of the country. As the months progressed, not only did their political views shape their belief systems about many aspects of science and the virus but also their opposition to the vaccine.

Although former President Donald Trump has adamantly demanded credit for the COVID vaccine, ironically Republicans have been the most apprehensive to get vaccinated despite blindly following the former president on many other key issues.

CHICAGO – Earlier this year, Erkin Peksoz wanted a COVID-19 vaccine so badly that he drove 640 miles roundtrip from Chicago to Quincy to get a Johnson & Johnson shot. Peksoz was happy with that decision — until recently, when the more contagious delta variant of the virus emerged. Now, he’d like to get a shot of a Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, in hopes of increasing his protection. “Until delta, I was not worried at all,” said Peksoz, a consumer data consultant. “I feel like I’m half-vaccinated now.” In clinical trials before the delta variant began to spread, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was fo...

COVID truther lies to Fox News that vaccines are ‘declining in effectiveness very quickly’

On Fox News Friday, Tucker Carlson played host to Alex Berenson, a COVID-19 truther who has consistently pushed falsehoods and wrong predictions about the pandemic. During the segment, Berenson falsely cast doubt on the effectiveness of the vaccines at protecting people from the virus.

"Masks are useless for their wearers, we have known that for at least a year," said Berenson. "What I've grown to conclude over the last 12 months is that masks are very simply symbolic, all that they are is a sign you are in a dangerous time and you need to listen to us. You know, if I don't see people wearing masks, I forget to be scared." He added that "Our vaccines, unfortunately, appear to be declining in effectiveness very quickly."
