Hundreds of Palm Beach County students already in COVID quarantine after just two days

On Thursday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that hundreds of students at Palm Beach County public schools are now in quarantine for COVID-19 — just two days after the schools opened for the year.

"Interim School District Superintendent Michael Burke said on MSNBC on Thursday afternoon that in addition to the 440 in quarantine, 5,700 of the district's estimated 179,000 students have opted out of the school district's mask mandate. Palm Beach County is home to the 10th largest school district in the U.S.," reported Austen Erblat. "Burke called on Gov. Ron DeSantis to look at current policies and make changes in the interest of students. 'The governor's got to take responsibility for establishing the ground rules we're operating under.'"

DeSantis admits defeat in threats to cut pay of school leaders who impose mask mandates

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has finally backed down on his threats to punish anyone who implements a mask mandate in schools or communities, the Miami Herald reported Thursday.

DeSantis had claimed that he would cut the salaries of superintendents and funding to community schools that mandate students wear masks. Currently, Florida is suffering a massive increase in COVID-19 cases and most parents are desperate to protect their children. His hardened and Trump-like approach to the COVID crisis led his poll numbers to sink and turned his state against him as hospitals climb to capacity.

Young people hit hard by long COVID as Delta variant surges

Initially spared the worst of the Covid-19 virus, more children and teens are experiencing "long Covid", with medical clinics cropping up to treat their symptoms. And though children still account for fewer cases compared to adults – even as the Delta variant drives up the numbers – their long-term symptoms are proving just as debilitating.

Since the start of the Covid-19 crisis, the prevailing view among medical experts has been that children and young people are more likely to recover quickly, or be asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, than adults.

School districts defy anti-mask order — your move, Greg Abbott

FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas school districts are bucking Gov. Greg Abbott's executive order that bans mask mandates, putting the governor in a delicate position as he continues to emphasize the need for personal responsibility to curb COVID-19 as hospital beds fill up. "As long as things are not that bad, then a personal responsibility theme out of Republicans and conservatives will work, has worked and might continue to work," said Cal Jillson, a Southern Methodist University political science professor.
