Conservative pundit says Nielsen has no business complaining: ‘When you sold your soul you don’t get to cry crocodile tears later’
CNN conservative commentator Tara Setmayer said Monday that she had no sympathy for former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who is reported to have stayed in the position out of fear that she'd be unable to find work after she became the face of President Donald Trump's family separation policy, which the majority of Americans find repellent.
"Kirstjen Nielsen really served dishonorably," Setmayer said. "There were so many opportunities for her to say 'you know what, Mr. President, I'm sorry, but we're not going to do that,' including the family separation thing."
"However, you know, what we saw with children in cages and the way that policy was instituted, really rocked this country to the core," she continued, pointing her own bonafides as an immigration hardliner. "It was something that we had never really seen before at that level, and she stood behind that."
"The president was trying to push her to do things that were illegal, I guess that was the line for her," Setmayer went on. "But ethically and morally there were so many things she did as Homeland Security secretary that she should have walked away from prior to this and she did not."
"Can you blame the immigration advocates and other people for saying 'listen, if any company that hires her, she gives a speech, we're going to protest that?'" Setmayer asked. "When you sell your soul, you can't cry crocodile tears afterwards when people hold you to account once you finally decide to walk away."
