NATO has 'never been stronger' after 'Putin's misstep': historian Douglas Brinkley

According to noted historian Douglas Brinkley, Russian President Vladimir Putin may have made a huge mistake by amassing his troops on the Ukraine border as part of his campaign to possibly invade the neighboring country before it becomes a member of NATO.

Appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" with host Willie Geist and regular Mike Barnicle, Brinkley praised the work being done by President Joe Biden and western leaders for not looking the other way as Putin seems poised to expand his empire even if it provokes a costly war

Trump endorsements flopping as some candidates struggle to raise cash: report

According to a report from CNN, the much sought-after endorsement of former president Donald Trump is turning out to have little impact in terms of donations for two Republican Party incumbents hoping to remain in the House of Representatives after the November midterm election.

While the Trump nod has helped elevate the profile and campaigns of some political newcomers, in the case of a House member from Illinois and another from West Virginia, that hasn't been the case as their floundering campaigns, combined with redistricting could mean they will be looking for a new job after their respective primaries.

All American presidents have lied – the question is why and when

Those who dislike a president tend to emphasize the frequency or skill with which he lies.

During the Trump administration, for instance, The Washington Post kept a running database of the president’s lies and deceptions – with the final tally running to over 30,000 falsehoods. President Joe Biden’s critics have insisted that he, too, is a liar – and that the media is complicit in ignoring his supposed frequent deception of the American people.

The frequency of these criticisms would seem to indicate that most people do not want a president who lies. And yet a recent study of presidential deception found that all American presidents – from Washington to Trump – have told lies, and knowingly so, in their public statements. The most effective of presidents have sometimes been effective precisely because they were skilled at manipulation and deception.

Republican pretzel logic on Jan. 6 proves the party is trying to convince Americans it wasn't a big deal: columnist

Intelligencer columnist Ed Kilgore pointed to the "selective amnesia" among Republicans when it comes to the Jan. 6 attack. They're desperately trying to downplay the attack, and some are outright claiming that it was all fake. But then there are the Republicans who want Americans to believe that it was merely one isolated incident and there's nothing to worry about.

"But in some ways the more alarming development has been that Republicans who remain openly opposed to the attempted coup nonetheless tend to treat it as an isolated moment of lawlessness in an otherwise perfectly good presidency," wrote Kilgore. "That means none of the many, many months of planning that went into [Donald] Trump’s predictable effort to deny and then overturn his defeat are acknowledged, or the likelihood that he could try it again in 2024. Most Republicans are united in that feat of amnesia. And that’s understandable since nearly all of them supported his reelection in 2020, and most will accept his renomination in 2024 if it happens."

During his own rant, Cotton claimed, "For four years when we had a Republican president who Democrats like Joe Biden accused of being in Vladimir Putin's pocket, and for some reason Vladimir Putin didn't invade Ukraine. It's because the only way to confront an aggressive autocrat like Putin or Xi Jinping is to show strength from the very beginning. That's the way to deter the kind of conflict that is likely about to happen in Ukraine."
