January 6th 'fake elector scheme' offers a clear 'path to prosecuting Trump': attorney

No one can accuse the January 6 Select Committee’s final report of not being comprehensive; the report, which National Public Radio (NPR) has published in its entirety on its website, is 845 pages long. One of the many things the Committee covers in the report is the fake electors plot of late 2020, which found MAGA Republicans in swing states circulating bogus Electoral College documents in an effort to give electoral votes that now-President Joe Biden legitimately won to Donald Trump.

In an article published by the conservative website The Bulwark the morning after Christmas 2022, attorney/columnist Philip Rotner examines what the January 6 Committee’s final report has to say about that plot and lays out some reasons why it makes a strong argument for criminally prosecuting Trump.

'A race to the prosecutors' office' for Trump's inner circle seeking deals after J6 report: former DOJ official

During an appearance of MSNBC's "The Sunday Show," former Department of Justice official Harry Litman called the report issued by the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection "a goldmine" for DOJ prosecutors and said it likely has set off a rush by members of Donald Trump's inner circle heading to the DOJ to swing a deal before the others show up.

Speaking with host Jonathan Capehart, Litman claimed the report contained multiple tips and possible leads that could blossom into criminal investigations.

GOP seeks to woo Black voters by attacking the LGBTQ community

When 27-year-old Don Abram was in middle school, he dreaded going to his single mom's Chicago South Side church where he was often the only male in a sea of females overflowing the pews. Other Black teens in his neighborhood taunted him as "fruity" with "sugar in his tank." Abram dreamed of being a pastor but he had a secret that would be an obstacle: he was gay, kept it from everyone, even his mom. He dreamed of being a pastor. He comforted himself with the idea that he could at least be an usher, greeting newcomers, and distributing cardboard church fans and Kleenex.

But at 14, he debuted as a preacher in the Greater New Mount Eagle Missionary Baptist. His sermon was a smash so he kept preaching. Later, in Harvard Divinity School, Abram realized that his Mount Eagle congregation must have figured out he was gay and still loved him even if they were baffled by his sexuality.

Trump attorney Jenna Ellis under investigation for alleged misconduct

DENVER – Jenna Ellis, the Colorado attorney who represented former President Donald Trump as he tried to overturn the 2020 election, is under investigation by the Colorado Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel.

'Guilty as all hell': Historian says re-electing Trump would be 'like letting Benedict Arnold run George Washington's troops'

On Friday's edition of CNN's "The Lead," historian Douglas Brinkley laid out what he considers the crucial importance of preventing former President Donald Trump from ever taking office again.

This comes after a historic vote by Congress to reform the Electoral Count Act, codifying the process of certifying presidential electors — and preventing another coup scheme like Trump and his associates attempted to execute in January 2021.

Even Trump thought an election fraud claim from former ally Sidney Powell sounded ‘crazy’: report

The final report released by the Jan. 6 committee this week says that Donald Trump – who has spewed election fraud claims for two years now – was even stunned by an election fraud claim from one of his former allies, Sidney Powell, the New York Times reports.

Just weeks after the 2020 election, Powell, who's also a former Trump lawyer, said on a conference call that “communist money had flowed through countries like Venezuela, Cuba and perhaps China to interfere with the election.” According to Insider, Powell also believed technology company Dominion Voting Systems was in conspiracy with Venezuelan leader, Hugo Chavez, who died in 2013.

Kayleigh McEnany avoided Trump after 2020 election because he wanted her to push voter fraud conspiracy theories to the press

Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany tried to avoid Donald Trump in the days after the 2020 election because he wanted her to regurgitate his voter fraud conspiracy theories to the press, Insider reports.

Former Trump aide Sarah Matthews told the Jan. 6 committee that Trump "wanted her to do briefings from the podium about the campaign, and wanted her to talk about Dominion." Dominion Voting Systems has been at the center of conspiracy theories disseminated by Trump's allies. The voting tech company has since brought lawsuits against several Trump allies, including Rudy Giuliani, Mike Lindell, and Sidney Powell, as well as Fox News.

Among the items included in the full report published by the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on Congress was testimony from top White House aide Hope Hicks, who had returned to the White House in the final year of Donald Trump's presidency.

In the first chapter, the report discusses the Nov. 19 press conference with Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and Jenna Ellis at the Republican National Committee (RNC) headquarters in Washington. Powell told the press that there was a “massive influence of communist money through Venezuela, Cuba, and likely China in the interference with our elections here in the United States.”

Legal experts find more possible criminal liability for Donald Trump in Jan. 6 report

The House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on Congress and the attempt to overthrow the 2020 election published its final report Thursday. What will follow, however, are some recommendations that are also sent to Congress in the form of legislation that can prevent another similar attack in the future.

Among the recommendations listed in the report, the committee believes that the 14th Amendment should be used to bar insurrectionists from serving in any office in the future, Bloomberg legal reporter Zoe Tillman cited.

These 3 Trump world figures are responsible for the fake electors scheme: J6 report

The House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on Congress and the attempt to overthrow the 2020 election published its final report Thursday, which includes conclusions about those responsible for Trump's fake electors scheme.

A group of Republican fake electors claimed that they were the true electors and signed letters to that effect that were then sent to Washington. The goal was to either get Vice President Mike Pence to accept the fake slate of electors or throw things into additional chaos.

Sean Hannity — under oath — admits he 'didn’t believe' election lies 'for one second': deposition

When the U.S. Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren handed down its unanimous decision in New York Times v. Sullivan back in 1964, it established a tough standard that plaintiffs have to meet in defamation lawsuits. Plaintiffs, according to the Warren Court, have to prove “actual malice.” And that is what Dominion Voting Systems is trying to prove in the defamation lawsuits it filed against Fox News, Newsmax TV, One America News (OAN) and others in response to the false claims they promoted about the 2020 presidential election.

After Donald Trump lost the 2020 election to now-President Joe Biden by more than 7 million votes, many far-right MAGA Republicans at Fox News, Newsmax and OAN promoted the false claim that Dominion’s voting equipment was used to help Democrats steal the election — a conspiracy theory that has been repeatedly debunked. Fox News, in response to Dominion’s defamation lawsuit, has maintained that its hosts weren’t saying the claims about Dominion were true, and that they were just asking questions.

Watch: Ari Melber mercilessly fact-checks Donald Trump's impeachment lawyer on live TV

MSNBC's Ari Melber offered a blistering assessment of former President Donald Trump's impeachment lawyer's distortion of hard facts. During a two-part segment on Tuesday's edition of "The Beat with Ari Melber," the MSNBC host recalled recent remarks made by Trump lawyer David Shoen.

"Trump's insurrection impeachment lawyer David Shoen insisted that Trump opposed that violence, that Trump's words were merely encouraging those armed fans to engage in peaceful and civic action, not storming the Capitol violently," Melber noted.
